Reese Witherspoon has confirmed her latest film role; the Hollywood movie star will be playing the mother of a murdered son in the film 'Devil's Knot,' a harrowing story based on the real life tale of the 'West Memphis 3' according to On The Red Carpet.com.
The original story was hugely publicized at the time, not least due to the involvement of several high profile celebrities following the judge's decision in wake of the murders. Sentencing teenagers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr to jail for the murder of three 8 year-old boys, the trio met support from A-listers Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder and Peter Jackson and walked free earlier this year upon completing 18 years and 78 days in prison - Echols was on death row with his convicted accomplices on life sentences.
However many believed that Echols - who wore all black, listened to metal music and claimed he was Wiccan - was singled out for being an outsider in Arkansas and in 2007 forensic evidence showed no trace of genetic material belonging to any of the three and appeals gained momentum after repeated rejection. The end came in bizarre circumstances this summer, reported the New York Times, with the three pleading guilty and yet being let free, bringing an end to one of the more bizarre legal protractions in recent US history. The film itself will be out in 2012 and will see Egyptian-born Atom Egoyan directing.
