Inherent Vice Review

Good

Like the Thomas Pynchon novel it's based on, this film remains infuriatingly evasive as its central mystery deepens. Also like Pynchon, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson is more interested in characters than plot, expertly orchestrating a lively cast in a series of raucous scenes. That these moments never quite add up to a coherent bigger story may feel unsatisfying, but the groovy 1970s vibe is infectious, and there's a lot of fun to be had in watching these actors play around with the rambling dialogue and nutty interaction.

It's set in 1970 Los Angeles, where private investigator Doc (Joaquin Phoenix) is a stoner who'd rather not work at all. Then he agrees to help his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston) find her missing property developer boyfriend Mickey (Eric Roberts). But this immediately puts him on a collision course with his long-time nemesis, Detective Bjornsen (James Brolin), a frozen-banana loving tough-guy cop known as Bigfoot. And the deeper Doc gets into the case, the more confusing it gets. Not only is the presumed-dead Coy (Owen Wilson) very much alive, but it's unclear whether a key clue about Golden Fang refers to a boat or a secret dental society. And suspiciously, Doc's DA friend Penny (Reese Witherspoon) always seems to be one step ahead of him on the case.

Anderson opens the film with a blinding flood of information and then simply never allows us to catch up, so like Doc we can't quite get a grip on what's actually going on. This effectively makes us feel as stoned as he is, bewildered by the way even the simplest revelations seem to contradict each other. But even as everything gets increasingly confusing, Anderson writes and directs scenes with a vivid intensity that's both hilariously entertaining and darkly involving. Each sequence carries a powerful punch, giving the superb cast plenty of quirky details to work with.

Wild Review

Very Good

Reese Witherspoon gives a beautifully stripped-back performance in this epic journey based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed. The title has a double meaning, as it follows this wild child through the Wild West in a quest to find her centre. This metaphor is as obvious as Cheryl's badly over-loaded backpack, but while the messages are unmistakable the filmmaking and acting are raw and natural. And the settings are spectacular.

After a chaotic patch of wanton living, seen in flashback, Cheryl (Witherspoon) sets off to hike a thousand miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada. She has no idea what she's doing, but bravely goes for it, overcoming feelings of loneliness before getting to know some fellow hikers along the trail as she traverses deserts, mountains and forests amid sunshine, rain and snow. All of this gives her a chance to make sense of a variety of memories involving her mother (Laura Dern), her ex-husband (Thomas Sadoski), her younger brother (Keene McRae) and her best friend (Gaby Hoffmann). And there are plenty of issues that need to be sorted out.

The film is structured in a way that lets us learn about Cheryl's past gradually. Important facts and events are dribbled in throughout the hike, shaping Cheryl's physical odyssey into a journey of self-discovery, which is more than a little gimmicky. Especially when "telling" quotes are printed right across the screen. Thankfully, Nick Hornby's script and Jean-Marc Vallee's direction never moralise about her history of promiscuity and drug abuse. These things are not the problem: they are symptoms of what's wrong with Cheryl. And this gives the film a maturity lacking in most Hollywood-studio films that are happy to find easy explanations and solutions.

The 2015 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards saw accolades going to some very well-deserved movies from the last year - with some even more well-deserved individuals picking them up.

Unsurprisingly, the Ensemble Cast Award went to the actors from 'The Imitation Game'; a movie depicting the era-defining career of codebreaker Alan Turing during World War II and his subsequent arrest for being homosexual. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role, with the likes of Allen Leech, Matthew Beard and Alex Lawther - the latter of whom plays Turing's younger self. Directed by the BAFTA nominated Morten Tyldum, the movie has already been nominated for five Golden Globes, and it definitely looks to be in line for an Academy Award.

Reese Witherspoon Told Cheryl Strayed 'Wild' Was A 'Rocket Ship'

Reese Witherspoon Jean-marc Vallee

It's not an uncommon thing for regular individuals to have a story so inspiring that Hollywood want to take it on, but for Reese Witherspoon, the story of Cheryl Strayed's 1,100 mile journey in her book 'Wild' was one of a kind.

Reese Witherspoon admits 'Wild' book brought her to tears

Witherspoon's latest movie sees her play a very real woman, whose hardships in her life with drugs and bereavement encouraged her to go on a voyage of self-discovery by taking on the testing Pacific Crest Trail despite having never had any previous hiking experience. 'I read the first half of the book on a plane and I was just in tears', Witherspoon confesses. 'Then I just couldn't wait to get back to the book and I read the rest on the flight back. I said, 'I don't know who Cheryl Strayed is, but I need her number immediately.''

Inherent Vice - Extended Trailer

Larry "Doc" Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) is a simple man. When he's not abusing illicit substances, he's solving crimes as a private investigator - although those two do sometimes overlap. But as the 1960s breath their dying breath, Doc's life is going to get perhaps a little too interesting for his liking. When his ex-girlfriend shows up one day, Doc finds himself unable to stay unintegrated with the 70s, as his new employer and former lover has him tracking down her new boyfriend and trying to thwart the plans of his wife and HER boyfriend. And if that wasn't complicated enough for him, there's something to do with a mysterious 'Golden Fang'. It's gonna be one hell of a decade.

Reese Witherspoon has been daring enough to try new projects in her career, especially since she has starred in a number of box office flops in recent years, but during the height of her success - winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for 2005's Walk the Line, the 38-year-old actress' personal life began to unravel.

Reese Witherspoon Aims To Unite Film And Feminism With 'Wild'

Reese Witherspoon takes on a strong female figure in 'Wild', in a bid to reinvent the male-centred world of Hollywood filmmaking. As Cheryl Strayed, a real life feminist and activist, she shows just how dynamic female protagonists can be.

You don't have to look too deeply into the film industry to discover just how male characters are out there compared with female roles, thus Reese Witherspoon takes on one of her most challenging roles yet in a movie that hopes to change that. 'About three years ago, Bruna Papandrea and I were just looking around and realising that they weren't developing that many great leading roles for women in film', she reveals, on how 'Wild' all started. 'Complex, interesting, dynamic women. So we decided to form a company and one of the first projects we bought was 'Wild'.'

Last year the public saw another side of actress Reese Witherspoon, when a video emerged online showing the Oscar winner arguing with a police officer while her husband was being arrested for driving under the influence. Speaking about her 2013 arrest Witherspoon said, "I think it was a moment where people realised that I wasn't exactly what they thought I was. I guess maybe we all like to define people by the way the media presents them, and I think that I showed I have a complexity that people didn't know about. It's part of human nature," the actress said.

Viola Davis recalled her difficult childhood and lent her voice to the Hunger Is campaign.

"Although my childhood was filled with many happy memories, it was also spent in abject poverty," she explained to the audience, according to Us Weekly. "I was one of the 17 million kids in this country who didn't know where the next meal was coming from, and I did everything to get food. I have stolen for food. I have jumped in huge garbage bins with maggots for food. I have befriended people in the neighborhood, who I knew had mothers who cooked three meals a day for food, and I sacrificed a childhood for food and grew up in immense shame."

Gone Girl Review

Extraordinary

Those who have read the blockbuster novel may be disappointed to know that author Gillian Flynn hasn't changed anything in adapting it to the big screen, so there aren't any surprises along the way. But they'll be glad to see the story so faithfully and skilfully adapted, with snaky direction from David Fincher and actors who add layers of new meaning to the characters. And non-readers are in for a thrillingly twisty experience as a mysterious conundrum shifts into a full-on thriller and then something much more intensely personal.

When Nick (Ben Affleck) discovers that his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) is missing on their fifth wedding anniversary, he has no idea what has happened. As recounted in Amy's journal, their marriage has been a whirlwind of sexy highs and dark lows, as both writers lost their jobs in New York and moved to rural Missouri to take care of Nick's terminally ill mother. As a result, their marriage ran aground, and Nick increasingly turned to his twin sister Margot (Carrie Coon) for support. As two police officers (Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) investigate Amy's disappearance, the media circus begins to paint Nick as a villain, led by rabid tabloid-TV host Ellen Abbott (Missi Pyle). So while he suspects Amy's stalker-like ex (Neil Patrick Harris), Nick has little choice but hire a high-powered lawyer (Tyler Perry) to defend himself.

Even at nearly two and a half hours, this film races along breathlessly as events and revelations continually shift the perspective. It's clear from the start that neither Nick nor Amy (in diary-entry flashbacks) are particularly reliable narrators. Both are a bundle of secrets, although Nick remains far more sympathetic. Affleck gives one of his most textured performances in years as a nice guy who struggles to look "nice" for the cameras. His isolation and confusion are hugely involving, which contrasts strongly to Amy's far too confident point of view. Pike manages to bring out the peeling onion of Amy's personality beautifully, offering telling glimpses of the real woman beneath the characters she seems to always be playing. And the supporting cast add details that twist their roles as well. Dickens and Fugit are a terrific double act, while Coon and Harris constantly offer surprising hints about their characters beneath the bravado and concern.

Phoenix always surprises with his choice of movie roles, going from the deadly serious sect drama 'The Master' (also directed by Anderson) to the coy, technological romance (we like the term Comp-Rom) of 'Her', and now he's takes a new turn once again in this comedic 70s thriller. He's a private investigator who is forced to take on his ex-girlfriend Shasta's case when her new boyfriend Mickey Wolfmann becomes embroiled in a kidnapping plot by his scheming wife Sloane and her secret lover.

Her request, such as it is, is to help her new boyfriend, Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts) from a plot by his wife Sloane (Serena Scott Thomas) and her boyfriend which will send Wolfmaan to the 'loony bin'. As if that wasn't complex enough, things are only going to get worse for Sportello, as the 70s are fast approaching and ready to turn his life upside down.

Devil's Knot Review

Very Good

Based on the events documented in West of Memphis and the Paradise Lost trilogy, this drama takes an almost clinical approach to the story. By filling in so many details and covering so many perspectives, skilled Canadian director Atom Egoyan sometimes loses the emotional connection, simply because there are too many punches to the gut. But it's utterly riveting.

The events took place in 1993 in rural West Memphis, Arkansas. After three 8-year-old boys go missing, suspicion immediately falls on four goth 16-year-olds: Chris (Dane DeHaan) has just left town, but the fiercely charismatic Damien (James Hamrick), hapless Jason (Seth Meriwether) and mentally disabled Jesse (Kristopher Higgens) are arrested and charged with murder. The victims' parents (including Reese Witherspoon, Alessandro Nivola and Kevin Durand) band together in outrage. But private investigator Ron (Colin Firth) thinks the police have wrongly accused these teens of being killers.

The story is a shocking account of a miscarriage of justice, as the community turns on kids who simply look a bit funny and the police and judicial authorities refuse to admit that they may have made some serious mistakes. The rush to judgement is terrifying, accompanied with explanations that falsely link the teens to satanic rituals and death-metal music. Egoyan cleverly builds a sense of outrage from the start, as the film mourns not only the young boys' death but also the horror of carelessly ruining three innocent teens' lives in response.

Devil's Knot Trailer

Devil's Knot is a biographical thriller drama based on the events of the West Memphis Three case directed by Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Chloe) and written by Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose).

Devil's Knot tells the chilling story of three young boys, Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore, going missing in the town of West Memphis, Arkansas. When the bodies are found beaten and murdered, the police and religious people of the town put the blame to a group of teenagers they believed to be Satanists, due to the dark nature of their appearance. After police investigation, three young adults, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., are arrested for suspicion of the crime. These three youths claim to be innocent of the murders, but the citizens of the town want justice for the murdered children and the punishment of the teenagers, innocent or not, seems to be their best answer.

The film will star academy award winner Reese Witherspoon portraying Stevie Branch's distraught mother, Michelle Enos (World War Z, Gangster Squad) as Vicki Hutcheson who was key in the arrest of the teenagers, Academy Award winner Colin Firth as private investigator Ron Lax and Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider Man 2, The Place Beyond the Pines) as Chris Morgan, who was a suspect in the murder case.

Stop Throwing Money At Adam Sandler, He's Officially The Most Overpaid Actor

Adam Sandler Reese Witherspoon Eddie Murphy Steve Carell Nicolas Cage Matt Damon

What we’ve assumed was true for a long time has now been confirmed: Adam Sandler is the most overpaid actor in the world, yielding the least amount of cash for the money he earns. Forbes, who did the maths and put everything into a handy list for everyone to peruse, bestowed the unwanted gong upon Hollywood's so called funnyman. But don’t worry there’s no awards ceremony for an achievement like this, just sarcastic news stories, a few memes and a big bag of Cheese Puffs for the list's #1.

Adam Sandler'Hey Sandler! you stink!' someone might have said once

So let’s look at some numbers: his last three films returned an average of $3.40 for every $1 he was paid. Last year, Natalie Portman earned $42.70 per dollar according to Forbes' most profitable actors list, just to give you some context.

Melissa McCarthy Sports Trench Coat On The Cover Of Elle, Internet In Uproar

Melissa McCarthy Penelope Cruz Reese Witherspoon Naomie Harris Marion Cotillard

Melissa McCarthy is covering this month’s issue of Elle magazine, following a year of career successes. The other five women included in the annual Women in Hollywood issue are Penelope Cruz, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Harris, Shailene Woodley and Marion Cotillard. The problem with this lineup is that, while all of the other women were photographed in form-fitting, rather revealing dresses, crop tops, bodysuits and the like, McCarthy’s cover shows her wearing a bulky trench coat in what is a very “editorial” look, but at the same time, makes it seem like the comedienne is getting a different treatment to her peers because of her size. There are, of course, other problems with the issue as well, such as the fact that only one actress out of the lineup is a woman of colour.

Melissa McCarthy, The Heat Premiere
The trenchcoat does seem to fit in with McCarthy's usual style.

Despite some commenters interpreting it this way, according to McCarthy’s reps, the actress picked out the outfit herself – surely there could be no objection to that. For her part, the actress isn’t offended by the stylistic choice and, in fact, feels delighted to have taken part in the shoot."

Very Good

Writer-director Nichols continues to get inside the heads of his characters with this involving but overlong dramatic thriller. Like his previous film Take Shelter, this is another fable-like movie, this time harking back to Huck Finn with a boys' adventure story set on the waterways of rural Arkansas. It's impeccably shot and edited, with terrific performances even from side characters. But at over two hours, the long running-time tries our patience.

Our hero is Ellis (Sheridan), a shy but steely 14-year-old who dreams of one day escaping his backwoods community. For entertainment, he explores the rivers with his pal Neckbone (Lofland), and when they hear rumours of a boat stranded in a tree, they have to investigate. Sure enough, there it is, then inside it they discover the fugitive Mud (McConaughey). Even though he's wanted for murder, they decide to help free the boat so he can escape with his battered girlfriend Juniper (Witherspoon), who's hiding in a local motel. But Ellis and Neckbone need some help with this elaborate plan, so they turn to the scary old man (Shepard) who lives across the river.

Cinematographer Adam Stone beautifully captures both the evocative settings and the expressive faces of the actors, who all bring an introspective touch to their characters. Sheridan and Lofland are excellent in the lead roles, which are pretty demanding as these two teens have to grow up quickly. And McConaughey and Witherspoon dive fully into their much flashier roles, constantly surprising us with sparky details that take these people in unexpected directions. There's also a telling smaller role for Nichols' regular Shannon as Neckbone's haunted, sidelined guardian.

"I Told Him I Was Pregnant!" Reese Witherspoon Embarrassed Over DUI Incident

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon’s clean-cut reputation took a blow recently when she was arrested for DUI in Atlanta, but in her first interview with the incident – which also saw her husband taken in – she did her best get her image back on track by admitting full responsibility for her action.

Talking to Good Morning America, Witherspoon commented "It's one of those nights. We went out to dinner in Atlanta, had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. And it's just completely unacceptable. And we are so sorry and embarrassed. And we know better." However she wasn’t let off the hook easily; it was reported she’d asked the cop taking them down if he knew who she was, but when that was put to her in the interview she commented “I have no idea what I was saying that night. I saw him arresting my husband and I literally panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I told him I was pregnant. I'm not pregnant! I said crazy things … I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better."

Witherspoon also said that she’d called up the police since to personally apologize, while also admitted it was embarrassing telling her children about the incident. Sounds like a lesson definitely learnt then. "There were so many lessons learned. Absolutely” she said. “When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car. I think I've played a lawyer so many times in movies, I think I am a lawyer — and clearly I'm not a lawyer. So, I learned a lot." Indeed Rees, real life is not like a movie.

Reese Witherspoon Arrested, Pulls Out 'Do You Know Who I Am?' Line

Reese Witherspoon Charlie Sheen Chace Crawford Nicolas Cage

"Do you know who I am?" It's the quote that has left celebrities cringing and police officers grinning with delight over the years. Reese Witherspoon is the latest Hollywood A-lister to use the immortal phrase (almost) before her arrest for DUI in Atlanta early on Friday morning (April 19, 2013). Cops told TMZ.com that  they spotted Reese and husband Jim Toth's car, a silver Ford Fusion, weaving in and out of lanes, pulling them over shortly afterwards.

Much to the delight of the arresting officer, and the millions reading gossip blogs in the subsequent days, Reese pulled out the celebrity card. As officers dealt with Jim, Witherspoon asked one cop, "Do you know my name?" The officer answered by saying, "No, I don't need to know your name." The Oscar-winner came back with, "You're about to find out who I am. You are going to be on national news." Of course, it was Reese that ended up on the news, having been arrested and told to attend a court hearing in Atlanta on May 22, 2013.

The actress released a statement apologizing for her behaviour. "Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," she said, adding, "It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behaviour."

Stevie Nicks Extinguishes Reese Witherspoon's Chances Of Playing Her

Reese Witherspoon Fleetwood Mac Lindsay Lohan

Stevie Nicks appears to have shot down any chance Reese Witherspoon had of playing her in a movie biopic, branding the Oscar winner "too old" to play her. Witherspoon has mentioned as a possible casting choice for a planned movie about Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, but the legendary singer says her days after numbered. "I've already told her she's almost too old," the singer told ET Canada at the Toronto premiere of her new documentary In Your Dreams.

It appears Witherspoon might be of the same opinion, "I love her, but she's like, 'I could play your mother," Nicks recalls. Though the Hollywood actress is just 37, a movie about the Fleetwood Mac singer is likely to focus on her younger years and rise to stardom, which probably would make it a little difficult for Witherspoon to tale the role. Anyway, she's got other things on her plate.

She was snapped on the set of her new movie 'The Good Lie' in Atlanta this week, wearing cowboy boots, a jean skirt and a teal top. The movie is based on the real life story of a young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the U.S with three other boys. He develops an unlikely friendship  with a brash American woman assigned to help him, though struggles to adjust to the modern world and feels guilty about the brother he left behind in war-torn Sudan.

Mud - Clips

Ellis and Neckbone are two young boys from Mississippi who spend their time exploring the wilderness and river near their home. Unnerved, they leave to find their boat and venture home, only to come across a new neighbour on the isolated island, Mud. Ellis and Neckbone are two fourteen year old boys from Mississippi who, after crossing a river in a small boat on one of their regular explorations, discover a larger motor boat stuck in a tree on an island after a previous flood. They claim the boat as their own but soon begin to discover that someone has been sleeping there and they come across Mud. Mud is a man who has been hiding from a group of bounty hunters who have been hired by the family of a man he murdered in Texas for attempting to steal his beautiful girlfriend Juniper. The boys are sympathetic and captivated by him and agree to help him mend the boat while he makes plans to meet Juniper, who is hiding out in a motel, and run away with her. Things don't go as smoothly as planned and deceptions and suspicion causes tensions to rise between Mud, Juniper and the boys.

'Mud' is an emotional journey tackling issues about right and wrong and good guys and bad guys. It has been directed and written by Jeff Nichols ('Take Shelter', 'Shotgun Stories') and received a last minute nomination for the Palme d'Or award on its showing at the Cannes Film Festival. It is set to hit cinemas on April 17th 2013.

Celebrities Create Video Appeal For Increased Gun Regulation

Beyonce Knowles Jamie Foxx Amy Poehler Reese Witherspoon

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, a number of Hollywood celebrities have banded together to create the “Demand a Plan” video, which urges politicians to take decisive action against gun violence and the public to demand said action from their representatives.

The video for demand a plan features a number of A-listers, including Beyonce Knowles, Amy Poehler, John Hamm, Elen DeGeneres and Reese Witherspoon among many others. The video is part of a larger effort to bring about increased gun control in the US. Another part of the campaign is a petition, available to sign at demandaplan.com, which demands the imposition of a criminal background check for every gun, sold in America, a total ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as the criminalization of gun trafficking.

Among those advocating the changes is actor Jamie Foxx, who has recently been very vocal with his opinions about violence and the media’s influence. All of this will come into play in the heated debate for and against increased gun regulation, with the other key player in all this being the now infamous NRA or National Rifle Association, advocating for the right to bear arms as a “means of self defense” and constitutional right. The association hasn’t clarified what kind of situation warrants the use of assault rifles. President Obama is yet to take any stance on the matter, despite continued appeals from both sides of the debate.

'Demand A Plan' PSA: Hollywood's Biggest Stars Unite Against Gun Violence

Beyonce Knowles Will Ferrell Reese Witherspoon Jamie Foxx Jessica Alba Zooey Deschanel John Legend

On the same day that the NRA calls for there to be armed guards at all schools, celebrities have come together to film a campaign video for 'Demand a Plan', which asks the government to do just that- come up with a plan to tackle the national epidemic of gun violence. The plan that the NRA offers is definitely not the answer that these celebs are after.

As stars, including Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and John Legend, among many more, speak the names of cities, and the names of places, they also ask their core question: How many more? Fundamentally, there can't be any more, enough is enough. And this is precisely why they are demanding a plan. The video- which you can see below- is linked to the Demand a Plan website, the homepage of which has three main requests:

1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America
