Red Hot Chili Peppers star Chad Smith has apologised to fans of Brazilian soccer team Flamengo after jokingly shoving a team jersey down the back of his pants at a drum clinic.

The drummer became the target of online death threats last week (ends08Nov13) after sports fans took offence to his actions at the Hard Rock Cafe in Belo Horizonte, which were posted online.

One Flamengo fan wrote, "(When you) arrive in Rio de Janeiro you will die motherf**ker", while another message read: "the fans of Flamengo want to kill you, (and) are already planning to invade (your) show to throw rocks at you."

Smith took to Twitter.com before the Red Hot Chili Peppers' show in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday (09Nov13) to apologise for his actions, writing, "I want to apologize for my inappropriate antics at the drum clinic, my joke about team rivalries went too far. Flamenco (sic) fans... I'm sorry."

Smith also posted a picture of himself signing autographs for Flamengo fans wearing a team shirt. He also met with players from the club and presented them with Red Hot Chili Peppers T-shirts.
