The Longest Day Review

Excellent
D-Day wasn't just fought at Omaha Beach, though Hollywood may have thought so before The Longest Day. D-Day involved a cast of thousands, and it took producer Darryl Zanuck, five screenwriters, four directors, and three hours just to bring it to the big screen. In fact, Spielberg cribbed large chunks of this film verbatim for Saving Private Ryan. Ultimately, Ryan is the better picture, but The Longest Day shows you more of the story (and it's closer to reality), from the paratrooper force sent in as a diversion, to a half-dozen beach battles, to the French Resistance and how they helped. Aside from a great war tale, Day also marks what must be the only film where you can see John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Fabián, Sal Mineo, Eddie Albert, Red Buttons, Peter Lawford, and Sean Connery all fighting the same war. And on the same side, no less.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Review

Excellent
I didn't get what all the fuss was over. Dance marathons? A couple of hours of the charleston and eventually everyone quits, right?

Wrong. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is set in the real dance marathon world of the Great Depression, when people were willing to do anything for a buck. Even if that means staying on your feet for 1,200 hours or more, with a few rest periods along the way. That's nearly two months. Dancing.

The Story Of Us Review

Bad
Okay, let's get thing straight, right up front. If you have been led to believe from the trailers that The Story of Us is a romantic comedy, you are in for a huge shock. This is a mean, bad, melodramatic horror story about two bickering people. There is little comedy to be had in the entire thing.

Which is a surprise. This is the man who brought us the masterful comedy When Harry Met Sally.... And here we are, with people on couches, talking to the camera about their relationship. Same premise, right? Ohhhhhhh noooooo. The Story of Us can be summed up quite simply: Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer hate each other. They spend two hours yelling, cursing, crying, and pouting. Then maybe they get back together. The end.

Hatari! Review

Good
National Geographic gets a 2 1/2-hour plug with this John Wayne picture, a harmless yet extremely pregnant look at a safari team in East Africa.

Wayne plays Sean Mercer, the grizzled veteran behind a group tasked with collecting exotic animals ordered by various zoos. Along the way, he must contend with various minor crises - a female photographer wants to tag along, ostriches get loose, a baby elephant needs to be cared for.

Sayonara Review

Very Good
James Michener's novel about an American G.I. (Marlon Brando) who falls in love with a Japanese kabuki starlet (Miiko Taka) after the Korean War is both timeless and bizarre. Timeless because it has that Romeo and Juliet feeling of crossed cultures -- the love affair made difficult here due to military rules and societal pressures, not to mention the fact that Brando's character agrees with those rules and pressures to start with. It's bizarre because of Brando's histrionics (Referring to sake, he says nervously to his Japanese gal, "We got rice back home but we just make rice pudding out of it, we don't drink it!"), Red Buttons in a serious role, and Ricardo Montalban playing a Japanese man (at least I think he's supposed to be Japanese). It's crazy. You won't know whether to laugh or cry, but you won't be able to look away.

The Story Of Us Review

Weak

Unlike any real-life marriage -- especially a marriage on the rocks -- "The Story of Us" is 100-percent predictable.

Rob Reiner's new romantic dramedy about a married couple's 15-year itch, this "Story" is so faithful to formula that there are moments (several of them, in fact) at which any seasoned movie-goer could shout out what's going to happen next and be right every time.

Fade in. Wife and mom Michelle Pfeiffer has soap suds on her hand and in her hair as her washing machine overflows with sloshing water and bubbles. What comes next?
