Russian Doll Review

Very Good
See Matrix bad guy Hugo Weaving play a loveable schlub in Russian Doll, featuring Weaving as an Aussie P.I. who agrees to marry his best friend's Russian mistress so she can stay in the country indefinitely. Sound like a recipe for disaster? Surprisingly, Russian Doll is short on the hijinks you might expect from this genre, focusing more on the quaint romance that develops (of course) and the mild culture clash between the two conspirators. Generally amusing.

Love Serenade Review

Very Good
This quirky Aussie comedy was massively overshadowed by Muriel's Wedding, which preceded it by a year, but it's just as enjoyable. Miranda Otto steals the show in an early performance of the mousy sister of a shrewish hag (Rebecca Frith), who is instantly smitten when a radio DJ (George Shevstov) moves in next door. There's not much shaking in their remote community, so when the DJ picks Miranda first, an epic catfight/love triangle ensues. Lots of fun, though the supernatural third act comes out of nowhere and ruins a lot of what was built up earlier.

Strange Planet Review

OK
Ever wonder what Naomi Watts' real Aussie accent sounds like? Strange Planet is your best bet -- and you'll also get to see Matrix bad guy Hugo Weaving playing a very rare "old man dating younger girl" role.

In the film, that younger girl (Claudia Karvan), Watts, and Alice Garner, play a trio of Aussies looking for love in all the wrong places, natch, and three guys who we know will eventually be the recipients of that love. The focus is on the ladies though, thanks to their extreme neuroses. Watts is still nursing a years-old breakup, Karvan is of course trapped in an unhealthy relationship with Agent Smith. The guys have problems of their own, and before the year which Strange Planet follows is up, well, they'll all be resolved.
