Rebecca Ferguson told her London audience that her relationship with Zayn Malik of One Direction is "so last year." Their relationship may have been overshadowed by that of Harry Styles and Caroline Flack, of late but when they were dating briefly last year, Rebecca and Zayn came under fire for their six year age gap, just as Harry and Caroline did for their own (admittedly rather larger) age difference.

According to the UK Press Association, Ferguson was coerced into making her feelings known during a sold-out show at London's Theatre Royal. When an audience member shouted out "Zayn," the softly spoken Liverpudlian retorted by saying "That was so last year!" During the hour-long set, Rebecca performed her own songs, such as 'Shoulder to Shoulder,' 'Glitter and Gold' and 'Too Good to Lose' to an audience that contained her supportive family and friends, as well as her fans. She also performed covers of Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come' and Drake and Rihanna's 'Take Care.' The show was part of her headline tour, named the Heaven tour, which included three dates in her hometown of Liverpool.

Rebecca met Zayn Malik whilst she was a contestant on the TV talent contest X Factor, in 2010. Rebecca lost out to Matt Cardle, who won the contest, with One Direction in third. When she performed the song 'Fairytale (Let Me Live My Life My Way),' she explained that the song is about crushes and added "I'm terrible at crushing. They always last for a year and then I think, 'Why did I fancy them?"
