Rascal Flatts star Jay Demarcus only spent 20 minutes with his wife and newborn son following the baby's birth on Friday (20Jul12), because he wanted to honour a concert commitment in Detroit, Michigan.
The bassist was in the city for the gig but jetted to Nashville, Tennessee after medics advised his wife Alison, who was due to give birth next month (Aug12), to undergo a Caesarean section because of health concerns.
DeMarcus tells People.com, "I immediately went into panic mode."
The star arrived just in time to see his son Dylan Jay's birth - but he spent just 20 minutes with his wife and newborn before heading back to Detroit.
He adds, "My wife was still on the operating table so it was very, very hard to leave, but we had a sold-out show and four acts out with us, so I wanted to keep my commitment and my wife gets that.
"I had a police escort when I hit the ground and got there 30 minutes before we went on stage, so I just left my scrubs on. The crowd was very sweet and gave me a standing ovation!"
Following a weekend of gigs, DeMarcus finally returned home on Monday (23Jul12) - and is now besotted with his son, a brother for his 19-month-old daughter Madeline.
He says, "Dylan's been in my arms all day. It's made the stressful weekend worth it to come back and hold him. It's finally sinking in that I've got a boy that's going to carry on our family name and I'm so thrilled to have little Dylan in our lives."
