Police in Colorado had to escort comedian Ralphie May out of his concert venue on Thursday night (15Jan15) after he indulged in too many marijuana-infused edibles.

The funnyman headlined a gig at the Avalon Theatre in Grand Junction, but he was so high by showtime, he struggled to make it onto the stage.

When he eventually stepped up to the mic, May had trouble telling his jokes and constantly forgot his place in his set.

The below-par performance prompted some audience members to start heckling him and demand refunds, while others hit back on May's behalf, causing chaos in the theatre.

Cops were called to the scene to maintain order and officers were later caught on tape escorting May to his tour bus after the show.

A representative for the comedian has since played down his disastrous gig, telling Tmz.com, "He was like a kid in a candy store, being in Colorado for the first time since pot became legal."

Marijuana was legalised for recreational purposes in the state in 2012.
