Soul star R Kelly was inspired to write a new religious anthem after pulling a pensioner from a car wreck.

The star stunned the audience at Saturday's (20MAR04) SOUL TRAIN AWARDS in Los Angeles with the story, before lip synching to new tune YOU SAVED ME, backed by a full choir.

Kelly told the audience at the INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL CENTER that he pulled an old lady out of her burning car recently, explaining, "She was OK... she was out of her mind. I told her, 'You are blessed.'"

The singer's uplifting new tune tells the story of a drink driver and a cancer sufferer who have both been touched by God.

The troubled singer was a double winner at the Soul Train Awards - he picked up honours for Best Album (CHOCOLATE FACTORY) and Career Achievements.

He thanked "the praying warriors out there" for supporting him as he fights to keep himself out of jail on child pornography charges.
