Will Smith reveals why he REALLY turned down Django
Will Smith has finally opened up on his Django Unchained role that never was, saying he refused to play the character of Django as he wasn’t the lead in the film. But was this a blessing in disguise?
He initially said "I was in the middle of Men in Black 3 and [Tarantino] was ready to go, and I just couldn't sit with him and get through the issues, so I didn't want to hold him up." But now Smith has revealed the real reason, his ego! “Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!” he tells Entertainment Weekly. “I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’” And while many people will be putting their tongue behing their bottom gum and making this noise: “uuuuhh”, he’s actually right. Django may have been marketed as the lead character, but Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Schultz was considered by many film fanatics to be the genuine lead, despite the fact he won Best Supporting actor at the Oscars. Smith loved the film though. He said, “I thought it was brilliant. Just not for me.”
Will Smith in London
We think this may have been the best thing that ever happened to Django Unchained. Smith is wonderful, sure, but he’s far more Fresh Prince than freed slave, and Jamie Foxx played the role so masterfully, we wouldn’t have wanted the film any other way. Well, maybe Waltz winning Best Actor instead of Supporting Actor, but hey ho.
