Legendary film-maker JEAN-LUC GODDARD always viewed his early career as a failure - despite being hailed as the saviour of French cinema in the 1960s.
The 74-year-old BREATHLESS director, who counts Quentin Tarantino amongst his biggest admirers, refused to believe his career was successful as he struggled to understand his position in Hollywood.
Goddard says, "I was stopped once by customs on the way into America. The customs officer asked whether I was entering the country on business or pleasure.
"I told him 'business' and he asked, 'What kind of business?' I replied, 'Unsuccessful movies'.
"The officer looked at me and said, 'Oh, I'm so sorry, sir'."08/05/2005 10:56
