Basketball movie GLORY ROAD scored a slam dunk at the US box office over the weekend (13-15JAN06) by beating Queen Latifah's new comedy and animated film HOODWINKED to the top spot.
All three films netted more than $12 million (GBP6.6 million) in their opening weekend, but Josh Lucas' film about a real-life Texas university basketball team that broke the colour barrier when it went to the college championship with an all-black starting line-up stole the top spot with a $13.5 (GBP7.5 million) million take.
Latifah's comedy remake LAST HOLIDAY came in second with $13 million (GBP7.2 million) and the updated Little Red Riding Hood cartoon, Hoodwinked, debuted at three.
Last weekend's (08JAN06) box office champion, HOSTEL, fell to number five on the new chart.
Meanwhile, King Kong passed the $200 million (GBP111 million) mark on its 33rd day of release in America following a $7.3 million (GBP4 million) weekend.
