British royal Prince Philip is "progressing satisfactorily" after undergoing exploratory surgery on his abdomen.

Queen Elizabeth Ii's husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, went under the knife on Friday (07Jun13), a day after he was admitted to the London Clinic in preparation for the operation after falling ill last week (ends31May13).

A statement issued by officials at Buckingham Palace reads: "His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh has had an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations. The results will now be analysed. At this early stage he is progressing satisfactorily. Further updates will continue to be issued when appropriate."

Prince Philip, who was hospitalised last August (12) with a recurring bladder infection, will celebrate his 92nd birthday on Monday (10Jun13) in hospital as he is set to remain under observation for two weeks.
