British royal Prince Charles has been forced to postpone his wedding to fiancee Camilla Parker Bowles until Saturday (09APR05) so he can attend POPE JOHN PAUL II's funeral in Rome, Italy.

The heir to the throne's wedding has been plagued with problems, after a series of failed legal challenges to the nuptials and his mother Queen ELIZABETH II's announcement she won't attend the ceremony.

But when the Pope died on Saturday (02APR05) Charles left his Swiss skiing holiday to travel back to England to attend the mass for the Pope at London's Westminster Cathedral this morning (04APR05).

And the Prince accepted it would be disrespectful to marry on Friday (08APR05) during the pontiff's funeral, so finally agreed to put off the ceremony so he can pay his respects without his future wife, who will remain in England.

A spokesperson for Prince Charles' office, Clarence House, says, "His Royal Highness the Prince will attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II in Rome.

"As a mark of respect His Royal Highness and Mrs Parker Bowles have decided to postpone their wedding until Saturday.

"It is expected that the arrangements will be largely the same as previously planned and more details will be announced as soon as possible."
