Hot off the back of a raft of praise for their debut EP 'Bad Weather' at the end of last year, Birmingham psych-punk trio Youth Man have announced a string of UK tour dates for early 2014 including a London show at The Old Blue Last on 28th January (see below for full list of dates).
The band recorded the EP in July 2013 at the Motor Museum in Liverpool with Al Groves (Elvis Costello, The Coral) on production duties and debut single 'Heavy Rain' outstripped all of the band's expectations racking up multiple BBC Radio One plays from Zane Lowe (who picked the band as his Next Hype selection three times in 2 weeks), Ally McCrae & Jen Long, Phily Taggart & Alice Levine, Mike Davies and also saw coverage from XFM and many more.
Formed in January 2012, the high school best friends were all musicians but had never played in a band together; bored of seeing the same predictable shit bands at bars they decided to start jamming together. Rehearsing in bass player Adam's kitchen on tiny pieces of cobbled together practice equipment led to tentative live performances and at their third show, front woman Kaila Whyte set the bar for their now standard chaotic live shows when she jumped headfirst into Adam's bass and managed to sustain a gushing head wound.
"She finished the set covered in blood," explains drummer Marcus Perks "mopped up the pool she'd left on the stage, and then went to the bar."
That's what Youth Man are all about: unbridled X-Ray Spex-tinged passion and the high velocity punk energy of legendary Welsh trio Mclusky mixed with an artistic edge that leans towards The Dead Kennedys' trippier moments - throwing caution to the wind, saying "f**k it" and smashing your guitar into a thousand sweat-soaked pieces.
With appearances alongside Them Wolves, Bovine, Shapes, PINS, Fair Ohs, Sauna Youth and Her Parents, they're quickly building a rabid following and recently supported buzz-band supreme The Bots, where the trio played so loud that they fused all the electricity in the entire venue.
The single launch for 'Heavy Rain' saw them sell out hometown venue The Sunflower Lounge, and if the excitement they seem to be generating so far lasts, we can only assume that there won't be much of any of these venues left standing after their upcoming headline dates.
