Southern release their new single, 'Where I Want To Be' on the 18th August through Marathon Artists. It is backed by another new track, 'The Way You Breathe'.
Southern are Belfast-born, Liverpool-based brother and sister band Thom and Lucy Southern. Despite their natural familial bond, this young duo individually brings two very different sounds and influences to what shapes Southern into such a dynamic, altogether genre-defying young band.
This new single is fronted by the Thom sung 'Where I Want To Be', a track that fizzes with a crunching, bluesy swagger, all thunderous riffing and indie-rock guitar shapes. In its refrain, the track changes pace and swirls off into a fizzing Stones-y stomp. Thom belts out his vocal furiously, evoking one of the most exciting, exuberant tunes of the year.
On the flipside, and in the starkest of contrasts, Lucy fronts 'The Way You Breathe', a simmering, gorgeously slinky noir-ish ballad more akin to Mazzy Star. The tender vocal, almost a genteel croon that coos and curls around the melody-rich backing offers an alternate weapon to Thom's explosive, infectious blues-rock.
Still in their infancy, Southern have already taken their music across the world from Nashville to Paris, Brooklyn to Seoul. As brother and sister, they know each other's strengths and play to them with devastating effect on this, their third release. It acts as another telling stepping-stone in this bright young duo's intriguing, nascent career.
