Memory Maze (aka London-based musician and producer Gavin Ellis) releases his new single 'Like A Mirage' on 30th June via new independent label Infinite Jest Records.
With Memory Maze, Ellis set out to create "psychedelic guitar music that would sound good on pills".We're not talking about 24 Hour Party People rave anthems here, but a sound Ellis describes as a "woozy, spacious thing." The lush layered textures and delicate, falsetto vocals that characterize Memory Maze are more akin to the psychedelic melancholia of The Flaming Lips' seminal album 'The Soft Bulletin' and the similar sensibility found in the other recent work of its producer Dave Fridman (Tame Impala, MGMT, Mercury Rev). Ellis' sonic touchstones are rooted in the narcotical technicolour haze of 3am, full of warm layers and expansive-yet-intimate moments.
New single 'Like A Mirage' documents the fallout from a broken relationship and the realisation that somebody can go from meaning everything to meaning nothing in the blink of an eye. The embittered lyrics sit above a backdrop of an addictive bassline, chorused guitars and wonky synths to form an unlikely pop marriage.
'Like A Mirage' is taken from Memory Maze's debut album 'From The Outside In' follows later in 2014.
