Chocolate Review

Good
Those of us who fondly remember Tony Jaa kicking serious ass all across Bangkok in Prachya Pinkaew's Ong Bak were looking forward to seeing another kinetic and gritty martial arts kickfest from director Prachya Pinkaew, and now Piankaew delivers Chocolate. The gimmick this time around: the ass-kicker is a girl! And not just any girl. An autistic girl!

It's been a tough life for Zen (JeeJa Yanin), the daughter of a former Bangkok lady of easy virtue named Zin (Ammara Siripong) and a Japanese gangster father named Masashi (Hiroshi Abe) who passed through just long enough to give the women a lifetime's worth of underworld enemies.

The Protector Review

Good
I feel about Tony Jaa, the star of The Protector, precisely the way I feel about Tiger Woods: I want to be him. To have achieved such a high level of mastery over one's mind and body must be such a great feeling. Jaa is currently the world's best cinematic martial artist, and his wild Thai-style kicks, tricks, and acrobatics, all achieved without any special effects, will leave you slack-jawed.

Jaa dazzled the world with his gritty debut in Ong Bak, a crazy and violent race through the streets of Bangkok. Unfortunately, this time around, he's a victim of his success, finding himself dropped into a movie with a bigger budget, eye-catching Australian scenery, and a much higher body count. Jaa doesn't need exploding helicopters, car chases, and sexy girls in mud baths. He's plenty exciting just executing a flying double somersault with a kick to the face of the bad guy.

Ong Bak Review

Very Good
Ong Bak is punk rock. In an age when martial arts pictures primarily consist of arty wire tricks, operatic settings, comic cornballery, and/or urban buddy situations, Ong Bak is a breath of fresh air, as gasped through a bloody, shattered windpipe.

Hong Kong is nowhere to be seen here. Ong Bak is a full-on product of Thailand, starring the brutally limber Tony Jaa, in a magnificent debut.
