In advance of Sunday's Golden Globes affair, Mike Goodridge, the editor of Screen International , the U.K.-based trade publication, has come to the defense of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that decides on the awards. "Having been a member of the HFPA for a decade, I have witnessed firsthand the contempt and loathing piled on the group by U.S. media figures who claim the 90 or so members are either obscure, corrupt, opportunistic, dumb or all of those things." (Last year, Hollywood blogger supreme Nikki Finke commented on her DeadlineHollywood.com site while the awards were being telecast "It's a completely meaningless awards show held by a scandal-riddled organization on a network desperate for any kind of ratings. Yet here I am live-blogging the Golden Globes held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.") In an editorial posted on the magazine's website, ScreenDaily.com, today, Goodrich wrote "Sorry to disappoint any of those HFPA-haters out there, the vast majority are working journalists who spend their year covering movies and movie stars." Goodrich, who says that he joined the HFPA in 2000, insisted that the organization has come a long way since the 1981 scandal when Pia Zadora received a Golden Globe after members were entertained in Las Vegas by her husband, who produced the movie in which she starred. While U.S. reporters continue to allude to that scandal, which occurred nearly 30 years ago, they fail to mention HFPA's charitable efforts and its contributions to restoring classic films, Goodrich observed. The fact of the matter is that nowadays "the Globes picks have a more mainstream bent than [those of U.S.] critics groups and therefore act as an indicator of Oscar choices."
