TV talent show AMERICAN IDOL had U.S. viewers gripped on Wednesday night (20May09) - more than 28.8 million people tuned in to see college student KRIS ALLEN crowned the 2009 champ. The audience figure makes the programme the top-rated telecast on TV since the Academy Awards in February (09).
