Recently (3 June 2014) the 'Happy' singer Pharrell Williams played an intimate show at New York's legendary Apollo Theatre. If you weren't lucky enough to be there, don't worry because director Spike Lee has filmed for show for you to see.
Stepping into the spotlight, sporting his signature buffalo hat, Pharrell Williams opens with Daft Punk's 'Lose Yourself To Dance' which Williams sang on, it was clear that fans were in for a good show. The song was accompanied by dancers who would be omnipresent throughout the night, wearing different colours making the show that bit more electric.
William's went on to treat fans to a career spanning set that featured songs from his band N.E.R.D, like 'She Makes Me Want To Move' and 'Lapdance'; songs from his collaborations like 'Beautiful' which he did with Snoop Dog and of course songs from his new well received solo album 'G I R L', such as 'Know Who You Are' and 'Lost Queen'.
Williams also played some fine covers, including a medley of Nelly's 'Hot In Here', Jay-Z's 'I Just Want To Love You' and Busta Rhymes' 'Pass The Courvoisier' (which William's originally featured on and Rhymes makes a frantic appearance for the gig).
Near the end of the show, Williams ties in thanking his female performers with a feminist speech stating that 'things are changing for women. Women are not sitting down anymore.ladies are we not going to change the world? I'm with you, when history changes I'm going to be on the right side of it with you', this ties in with a cover of Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl'. Could this be to tackle the controversy around 'Blurred Lines', the Robin Thicke song Williams features on that many considered sexist? Funnily enough William's then plays 'Blurred Lines' (with a guest appearance from T.I). Is Williams trying to be ironic? Is he sticking a middle finger up to critics? Who knows, but either way it gets people on their feet.
'Get Lucky' gets an even bigger response as people are overjoyed at the intro of the Daft Punk megahit Williams provided vocals for last year. He closes the show with 'Happy' where he approaches the front rows, where they hug him, take pictures with him etc, while he performs.
A great show whether you were lucky enough to be there or are watching it on your computer. Whether you're a die-hard Pharrell Williams fan, or just know him for his biggest hits this show is worth a watch as Williams performs songs big and small in a highly entertaining manner.
William's is set to tour Europe in September and October, playing Manchester Phones 4u Arena on 9 September 2014 and London O2 Arena on 9 October and 10 October 2014. Don't miss out.
