Honored to be among this year's #FCFestival speakers. 🙏🏾🙏🏾 https://t.co/TT6j07NYqa
This film recounts such a great true story that we don't mind the fact that it's all a bit too warm and polished, or that it kind of ignores its side characters. The central events, which took place more than 55 years ago, touch on big issues that have a strong present-day relevance. And the acting is excellent from a gifted ensemble cast. So even if the filmmaking isn't very complex, the themes resonate strongly.
It's set in 1961 Virginia, where Nasa is losing the space race to the Russians. To get things moving, programme director Al (Kevin Costner) turns to Katherine (Taraji P. Henson), a mathematician who works with the black women in the "colored computer" room downstairs. In Mission Control, she proves her value as an ace number cruncher. Meanwhile, engineer Mary (Janelle Monae) struggles in a system that ignores her contributions, while Dorothy (Octavia Spencer) has been passed over for promotion despite the fact that she's the only person who can make any sense of the new computer system. So as the entire facility works to get a man into space, it's doubtful that the leaders will see that these women are vital to the project.
The fact that this story is so little-known kind of answers that question. But the film never takes a political approach, instead finding the humanity in the situation. Gentle humour abounds in the interaction between characters, and even the racial insults (such as requiring Katherine to sprint through the rain to use a designated restroom) are played for chuckles. Meanwhile, the script offers slight glances at their personal lives: Katherine is a single mother with three smart daughters and a sweet romantic interest (Mahershala Ali), and Mary's preacher husband (Aldis Hodge) helps her fight for the right to study in an all-white college. Spencer's Dorothy doesn't really get a subplot, but then she's the movie's scene-stealer, so she doesn't really need one.

Pharrell Williams doesn't think he could save the world, but believes women have the power to save the world.
Pharrell Williams doesn't think he could save the world.
The 43-year-old musician - who has been an advocate for female equality - believes women have the power and ability to ''save'' the world if they wanted to, but he doubts his own ability to make as big a difference.
Speaking to Esquire magazine about his beliefs, the 'Happy' hitmaker said: ''I don't know what I could do, but I know if women wanted to, they could save this nation. If women wanted to, they could save the world.''

The 35 year old journalist mixed up 'Hidden Figures' and 'Fences' while interviewing Pharrell Williams at the Golden Globes.
Jenna Bush Hager issued a tearful apology on the ‘Today’ show to her colleagues, the morning after she made a blunder on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards when she made a reference to “Hidden Fences”.
The 35 year old journalist – and the daughter of former president George W. Bush – recognised her mistake when speaking to her NBC colleagues Natalie Morales and Al Roker on Monday morning (January 9th).
“I thought last night was terrific. There were a lot of great moments,” she said during the 8am segment, reporting on the evening’s goings-on. “Viola Davis was one of my favourites when she said to Meryl Streep, 'You made me feel like enough.' I thought that was a beautiful speech.”

Gospel singer Burrell gave a sermon in a church earlier this week in which she reportedly called homosexuals "perverted".
Janelle Monae has responded to the firestorm created by Kim Burrell’s recent homophobic rant, telling her fans that the gospel singer will not be performing with her and Pharrell Williams on the ‘Ellen Degeneres Show’ later this week.
The three singers were scheduled to perform their song ‘I See a Victory’ from the movie Hidden Figures – of which Monae herself is a star – on DeGeneres’ show on Thursday this week (January 5th). However, Burrell has been castigated for a recent sermon she delivered at a church in Houston where she described homosexuals as “perverted”.
The gospel singer, 44, has compounded the anger directed at her for refusing to back down or apologise for her comments in a later Facebook Live broadcast.
Pharrell Williams has scored the soundtrack for new movie Hidden Figures which tells the true story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson who were the first African American women to work at NASA as mathematicians/physicists.
The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer in the three lead roles and even though Monae is a respected musician in her own right ahw only stars as an actor in this particular film; director Theodore Melfi turned to acclaimed songwriter Pharrell Williams to pen the lead track 'I See A Victory' as well as many more featured in the film.
I See A Victory also sees gospel singer Kim Burrell sing the lead vocal. Both Pharrell and Kim took to the stage at the Toronto Film Festival to perform the song live in front of a large crowd. The pair also recruited a superb gospel choir to sing backing vocals.
The long-running American kids' show is returning to British screens for the first time since 2011.
Beloved children’s TV show ‘Sesame Street’ is set to make a return to British television screens next week, with some big name guests including Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams in its brand new series.
The legendary and long-running series, celebrating 47 years on air in America this month, is coming back to screens in Britain regularly for the first time in 15 years since it was first pulled from schedules back in 2001. After a brief revival a few years later, it was then removed again five years ago. It’s due to begin once again at 4pm on children’s channel Cartoonito next Monday (November 7th).
Gwen Stefani will be a guest on the new UK series of 'Sesame Street'
The R&B/hip hop legend unleashed a video for her brand new single 'WTF (Where They From)' this week, her first new material in seven years.
The 44 year old star was responsible for some of the most distinctive and downright cool pop music of the late ‘90s and mid noughties, but she hasn’t released anything since 2008, when she vanished from the music scene. However, she's been gradually easing herself back into music, notably with a brief performance at halftime of February's Super Bowl.

The ‘Happy’ singer spoke to a crowd mostly made up of young people, at the UN General Assembly.
There was no better person to speak on the UN’s International Day Of Happiness than the ‘Happy’ hitmaker himself Pharrell Williams, who took to the podium in New York on Friday. The singer used his speech to address the young crowd on the subject of climate change and why we need to protect our planet and act now.
Pharrell Williams during the International Day Of Happiness
"Protecting our planet is fundamental to the pursuit of human happiness," Pharrell told the crowd at the UN General Assembly. "We only have one home and there's climate change... If you don't (take) care of your home, you don't have a life, and we have to transition from climate change to climate action.”
Pharrell comes out on top at the annual BBC Music Awards.
The 2014 BBC Music Awards results came as no surprise as three pop favourites were sent home on Thursday (December 11th 2014) clutching awards - and deservedly so at that. So who were our winners for British Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and BBC Introducing?
Ed wins British Artist Of The Year
Ed Sheeran - Suffolk singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran landed British Artist of the Year, despite being up against some serious competition with the likes of Sam Smith and rock legend David Bowie. But it was a no-brainer when his second studio album 'X' - produced by His Musical Majesty Rick Rubin - became a number one success and he also became Spotify's most streamed artist of all time. He's also had a good year in that he got to appear on Bob Geldof's Band Aid 30 tribute 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' as well as appearing at the first ever London edition of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

The first edition of the annual music awards ceremony was held at Earl's Court in London, and saw big musical names take home the prizes.
Unsurprisingly, two of the most commercially successful artists in the world took home awards at the ceremony at Earl’s Court in London on Thursday evening. According to many onlookers, the awards were introduced this year to allow the BBC to rival ITV's coverage of the BRIT Awards, not themselves due for another two months.

Gwen parties with emoticons in the video for this catchy Pharrell produced track.
Gwen Stefani has just dropped the awesome video for ‘Spark the Fire,’ the second single from her much anticipated new album. Featuring bright colours, animation and floating Pharrell heads, ‘Spark the Fire’ is trippy, even by Stefani’s zany standards.

The man is everywhere these days. Look out for "Gust of Wind" in November.
I love Pharrell almost as much as I love that giant mushroom hat and after he produced the biggest hits of 2013 AND 2014, it’s likely that you do too. The multi-talented producer/rapper/musician/songwriter/mogul capped off his UK spree with a tell-all interview with The Independent, which basically covered everything from Robin Thicke to the aforementioned hat. The latter is apparently a a vertiginous version of an old Vivienne Westwood design. After it made its debut at the Grammys in January, it’s definitely earned the title of Hat of the Year.

Christina Aguilera is returning to the American swivel chair for the eighth season
Christina Aguilera is back in the red, swivelling chair of The Voice, USA. The platinum pop diva will be back for the eighth season, starting in early 2015, making the new line-up look suspiciously similar to the programme’s initial foursome.

The latest round of "The Voice" auditions just gave us more reasons to love Pharrell Williams. Also Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine. But mostly Pharrell.
It’s settled, Pharrell Williams is the best The Voice judge. Sorry, everyone else, your efforts were valiant, but the contest is now closed. Pharrell won us all over with his efforts to win contestants for his team. He did everything from drawing to dropping down to his knees to throwing out some expert sales pitches.
The puppy dog eyes never fail.
Straight off the bat, he tried to woo Katriz Trinidad, a 15-year-old musical powerhouse from San Diego. “I never thought that I would find something I usually look for for my own label," he said convincingly. "I have been dreaming about an artist like you for my entire career.”
After the bizarre hoax at the weekend that tried to convince the world Miley Cyrus had died, the notorious singer bounced back with an energetic performance in Pharrell's new music video, 'Come Get it Bae'.
Cyrus also features on the track's vocals, and -perhaps most shockingly of all- resists the urge to twerk in the new vid. Instead she's seen enthusiastically dancing around with Pharrell, wearing a cute crop top and shorts combo. Pharrell, of course, is wearing another one of those oversized Vivienne Westwood stetsons that have become his trademark look.
Miley goes for a different look in the video than her usual spandex swimsuits and fluffy jackets

Williams says women are the centre of humanity
Despite featuring prominently in the one of the most controversial, sexist videos in the history of pop music, Pharrell Williams has called for gender equality in front of a packed London crowd.
Pharrell Williams performs live on The Today Show
Pharrell told the 600-strong crowd at Brooklyn Bowl in London's O2 Arena for MasterCard Priceless: "In America, women are paid 77 cents to every dollar, this is the year everything changes. You guys are going to have to start voting different. When you see a woman naked, don't tear her down - it's about where she's coming from in her mind. Let's give women the equality they deserve."
The 'Happy' singer said sorry in a short statement
A pattern is emerging: celebrity offends race, culture or religion in some way > celebrity makes public apology > people forgive said celebrity over time. And these scandals are simply replaced; Mackelmore and Jonah Hill’s recent indiscretions are certainly on the back burner now, while Pharrell remains submerged in hot water.
Pharrell Williams has apologised for his insult to the Native American community
"I am genuinely sorry," Williams wrote in a statement provided to Buzzfeed. "I respect and honour every kind of race, background and culture."
The 'Happy' singer is to perform at a special one-off concert filmed by Spike Lee.
Pharrell Williams is to team up with director Spike Lee for the streaming version of his upcoming concert at the Apollo Theater on the 3rd June. The concert will be part of American Express Unstaged, a collaboration between YouTube and Vevo, the 14th instalment of a series in which performers and directors team up for a unique staged performance.

Of the very special New York venue, Lee added "I think it was a great choice [...] It's one of the great places for music in the world, when you think of all the people who've come across the stage."

Coachella weekend 2, did Outkast fare any better second time around?
The Coachella festival has closed its gates for another year, but not before it got an almighty second weekend send off. Last weekend the festival brought plenty of star performances, special surprises and maybe a slight tinge of disappointment when it came to one of the most anticipated acts. So how did weekend two fare and most importantly were Outkast any better the second time around?
Outkast had to prove themselves after last weekend's disaster
Last weekend Outkast’s much hyped reunion was met with resounding negativity as poor sound quality and bad production values marred their set. One week later and it seems the duo have learnt from their mistakes as Billboard reports Andre 3000 and Big Boi took to the stage, “strutting with an emboldened confidence light-years from the standoffish attitude that came through the first weekend.”

Frozen is heading straight for the records set by another Disney Flick almost two decades ago.
The Frozen soundtrack keeps going strong for its tenth non-consecutive week at the top of the US album chart. Its current run has been going on for 5 weeks straight. It looks like Frozen might be a constant presence in the charts throughout spring, which is unfortunate for news writers, who have all run out of ice-related puns a long time ago.
Idina Menzel is getting some well deserved recognition out of the soundtrack's success.
For the fifth week in a row, Frozen took the top position with sales of 133,000 (off 11%), according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending April 13, vaulting over the 2 million-unit sales mark. Frozen has become a hit of Lion King proportions, having matched the 1994 soundtrack’s ten week run. However, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, via Variety, the album is nowhere near topping The Lion King's 10 mln copies record, despite achieving double platinum status.

The 41 year-old music mogul became very emotional when Winfrey showed a clip of fans from around the world dancing to 'Happy.'
Pharrell Williams is very emotional about the effect his music can have on people.
The 41 year-old is definitely not afraid to show his real emotions as he broke down while being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on Saturday night (April 12th).

Saturday was a rough day at Coachella, but definitely worth it for those who braved the storm
If you’re at Coachella this year, you won’t be reading this story and if you are… well, this might just make things worse, but here’s a rundown of the best things you’re missing anyway. Saturday saw a huge dust storm rip through Coachella Valley on Saturday, but diehard fans stuck it out anyway for Muse’s headlining gig. The English rockers performed festival staples like "Hysteria," "Resistance," and "Magic," but a large portion of the Coachella crowd left the field early as high winds swept sand and dust across the festival field, Reuters reports.
Muse went for festival favorites and a Nirvana tribute.
Even Pharrell Williams' Grammy hat was out for the occasion.
An excellent topic to kick off Monday with – Anna Kendrick hosted SNL last week (excellent unless you missed it, of course.) Kendrick was perfect at matching the pitch of SNL’s comedy (get it?) On her first time hosting, she kicked things off with a Broadway-like musical number to the tune of Beauty and the Beast’s Little Town in lieu of an opening monologue, proving that everything is funnier when you add synchronized dance.
Kendrick tried her best, but the script didn't do her any favours.
The Disney theme continued throughout the night with Kendrick doing a Kesha-inspired (sans $) version of the little mermaid. A little mermaid who can’t sing and is, apparently, vaguely racist. No seriously, that was the sketch. Kendrick mostly played characters we’ve seen her do before – nervous first time host, nervous fairytale creature, nervous zookeeper, nervous blonde Republican lady – the writing team really did not do her any favors.

Pharrell Williams isn't the first celebrity to bring out their own scent, but how well have these other celebrity fragrances been received?
The celebs aren’t satisfied with us mere mortals wanting to just look like them, apparently we have to want to smell like them too. Pharrell is trailing behind with just 112,000 copies of his G I R L sold in its debut week. Pharrell's famous Grammy hat is now up for auction on eBay and bids have already reached over $10,500.
The hat Pharrell wore at the 2014 Grammy Awards received so much interest that it became the subject of social media for most of the night. Now the exceedingly large fedora hat is available on eBay. Most likely due to the overwhelming publicity the hat received Pharrell decided to auction it off for the benefit of charity.
The bidding originally opened for only $200 on eBay and now it has reached $10,500 and will mostly rise higher before the auction closes. The Mountain hat was designed by British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. On social media it was dubbed as a hat you would find on a park ranger or even in a Yogi Bear cartoon.

A Motley Crue announcement, an out-of-this-world Grammys gig and an angry Quentin Tarantino: there wasn't a dull moment in the news this week.
Grammy Awards Glory: Last Sunday's Grammy Awards proved probably the most spectacular ceremony in living memory. The most enviable of all performance line-ups entertained a near-record 28.5 million viewers, with Madonna, Daft Punk, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, Imagine Dragons, Stevie Wonder, Nile Rodgers, Ringo Starr, Sir Paul McCartney, Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age and Dave Grohl all showing off their skills.
As for the small matter of the actual awards, Pharrell Williams, Daft Punk and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the evening's big winners whilst newcomer Lorde picked up two gongs and Jay Z and Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Kacey Musgraves and Black Sabbath were also prominent victors. This, year, perfect pop princess Taylor Swift went home empty-handed, which made for some pretty funny videos.
The awards ceremony was itself a winner last night.
The 56th Grammy Awards has been rewarded for its monumental live performance line-up at last night's ceremony with the news that more people tuned in to catch the show than have done since 1993. The star-studded ceremony, which showcased talent including Daft Punk, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Nine Inch Nails, Sire Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and Madonna, proved to be its most successful in 21 years with 28.5 million viewers.

This year's viewing figure, provided by the Nielsen Company via the AP, mark an increase on last year's 28.4 million watchers of the telecast beamed straight from Los Angeles' Staples Center. The Grammys reached nearly 40 million people during Adele's big year two years ago and reportedly hasn't been below 25 million since 2009.
The surviving Beatles will perform at the ceremony and fans are hoping the two will join each other on stage for a reunion performance
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are set to perform at this years 56th Grammy Awards, with their inclusion to the Grammys set list being announced this week by the music awards showcase. Although the organisers for the event have revealed that the pair will perform, they have yet to specify whether the two will appear on stage together at all, a prospect that most are hoping for.
Paul and Ringo will hopefully be performing together
The pair were announced as two of the latest confirmed acts to appear at the awards show, with fellow performers John Legend, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Sara Bareilles and Carole King also added to the bill.
Ke$ha and Pitbull's new party track proves enough of a hit to dethrone Pharrell.
Pitbull and Ke$ha have finally outperformed their rivals to claim the UK's first official number one song of 2014. Their new party track 'Timber' has danced to the top of the charts, ahead of previous top dog Pharrell Williams and his 'Happy' as well as Avicii's 'Hey Brother.'
Ke$ha Celebrates Another Chart-Topping Party Stomper.
Inspired by Avicii's 'Wake Me Up,' 'Timber' blends a dancefloor beat with country influences and is both Pitbull and Ke$ha's third number one single in the UK after having each separately conquered the charts twice before. Though the first week of the year is traditionally quiet one for music sales, purchases of 'Timber' have numbered an impressive 139,000 copies this week, according to the Official Charts Company.

Pharrell has just been on a roll over the last few years while we've been waiting for him to release a second solo studio album. In 2010, he composed the film score to the much adored Golden Globe nominated animated film 'Despicable Me' and since then things only seem to be getting better for him. He has appeared on three number singles from other artists since he released his last one in 2006, but now he's well and truly back as a solo star in his own right as he releases a brand new single entitled 'Happy' which he wrote for the much-anticipated 'Despicable Me 2'.
There's not a lot you can criticise with 'Happy'; with Pharrell's classic soul voice it has a strong Motown feel - it's simple and archetypal with no embellishments. Unbelievably catchy, it's definitely the kind of song that makes you want to dance and sing along - an important element for any children's film tune. More importantly, it's infectiously cheerful with its summery vibes that ease that seasonal misery winter often brings and it's just so wonderfully innocent - not something often found in your average modern pop song.
It gets a little repetitive after a while, but maybe that's the beauty of it; it's uncomplicated with a very clear sentiment, and see if you don't clap along ("if you feel like a room without a roof...")!

X Factor winner Sam Bailey is officially the No. 1 artists this Christmas, as the winner of the singing contest has shot to the top of the UK Singles Chart with her debut single, 'Skyscraper.' The single had been holding strong at the top of the chart for most of the week since it was released after her win on Sunday, 15 December, and it has managed to hold on to claim the No. 1 spot officially.
Looks like Sam is happy with the single
As well as being this year's Christmas No. 1, Bailey is also one of the fast-selling artists of the year, as 'Skyscrapers' has sold more than 149,000 so far. She also managed to out-sell her nearest competitor, Pharrell William's 'Happy,' by almost two to one. Not a bad feat for a 36-year-old mum of two making her chart debut.

The singer and his 'Blurred Lines' collaborators have taken the Gaye estate and Bridgeport Music to federal court following claims from both parties that he had stolen elements from their songs for his summer hit
Robin Thicke may have enjoyed having THE number one hit of the entire summer with 'Blurred Lines,' but the singer now is apparently locked in a legal battle over that very song following claims that it sounds very similar to two older tracks. Despite professing his love for Marvin Gaye and discussing the influence the singer has had on his career, this hasn't stopped Thicke and his 'Blurred Lines' collaborators T.I. and Pharrell Williams from taking Gaye's family to court following complaints that 'Blurred Lines' sounds strangely similar to Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up.'
Thicke may be a fan of Gaye and Funkadelic, but he also has a reputation to uphold
According to The Hollywod Reporter, who broke the story, the Gaye family had apparently threatened Thicke and co. with legal action over the similarities between his hit song and Marvin's 1977 track. A similar complaint had been made by the company Bridgeport Music, who represent the legendary funk band Funkadelic, with the company claiming that 'Blurred Lines' shares an uncanny resemblance to their track 'Sexy Ways.' Now both the Gaye Estate and Bridgeport Music will both legal action from Thicke, T.I. and Williams as the latter attempt to brush off any claims of plagiarism.
Robin Thicke is suing Marvin Gaye's family!
In order to protect the song - which will probably turn out to be the biggest of the year - Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and Clifford Harris Jr are going to court. A lawsuit filed on Thursday (August 15, 2013) by the trio against Marvin Gaye's family and Bridgeport Music concerned the similarities between 'Blurred Lines' and at least two songs, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Let us explain. The suit claims that the Gaye family is alleging the controversial song "feels" or "sounds" the same as Marvin's 'Got To Give it Up' and that the "Gaye defendants are claiming ownership of an entire genre, as opposed to a specific work."

Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' is finally out despite having lyrics branded as "rapey."
Though the title track from Robin Thicke's latest album Blurred Lines was disparaged by critics for seemingly promoting sexual violence with its worrysome lyrics, the album was released today in the USA and is expected to hit No.1 as quickly as it did upon its 15th July release in the UK. The lead single from the album, 'Blurred Lines', which featured rapper T.I. and Pharrell Williams was released in March but ignited the fury of anti-sexual violence campaigners when the music video debuted.
Robin Thicke: Negative Press Could Have Increased The Notoriety Of His Music & Boosted Sales.
The video depicts Thicke and the accompanying rap duo surrounded by scantily clad women who strut around waiting to be pawed at by the suited men. Thicke hit back at those who criticised him, insisting he was a man of faithfulness and respect towards women, having been with his now-wife Paula Patton since their high school days. However, branded as "rapey", the song sickened many who saw it as exploitative and objectifying women but the single, perhaps boosted by the swirling negative press, hit and held the top spot on the singles chart in 21 countries.
Miley is gearing up for a busy autumn.
If a Twitter feed, an instagram stream and a steady supply of gossip don’t provide enough insight into Miley Cyrus’ life, this fall there will be more – namely, an MTV documentary about the process of recording and promoting Miley’s new album and her life throughout. Apparently, it’ll be a Ke$ha-esque affair, a la My Crazy Beautiful Life, only instead of a reality series, the Miley-verse will be presented in feature film form.
If We Can't Stop was this shocking, wonder what she has in store for the documentary.
This won’t be the first documentary of this kind, as MTV has previously produced similar features on Drake, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Demi Lovato. For some reason, however, the Miley movie seems to be attracting a lot more attention than any previous MTV doc. Of course, the most crucial part of the documentary is the album itself. While only one track, We Can’t Stop, has seen the light of day so far and to controversial reception at best, Pharell Williams, who collaborated with Cyrus heavily on the album, swears by its different sound and heavier (but not too heavy) style.
Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' is dominating the singles chart in the U.S.
'Blurred Lines,' Robin Thicke's huge breakout hit featuring that T.I. and Pharrell Williams, has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the fifth week. The track also spends a sixth week at No.1 on the Digital Songs chart, selling 423,000 downloads - equalling last week's total and bettering the previous week's 423,000.
'Lines' is only the second song to sell at least 400,000 downloads in three tracking weeks, joining Gotye's massive hit 'Somebody That I Used To Know' featuring Kimbra, which reached the mark on charts dated April 28, May 5 and May 12, 2012, according to Billboard.com.
'Blurred Lines' has now sold 2.4 million copies date, though concerns still remain over the song's controversial video featuring various well-known models parading around nude while Thicke stands around in a suit.
The claim that "Blurred Lines" trivializes rape is "ridiculous", says Thicke.
Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and the accompanying video might have been getTIng a lot of flack for the “rape-y” lyrics and the objectification of women in the clip, but fret not, because Thicke himself has stepped up to defend his work. You have to admire the man for standing up to defend lyrics like “Nothin' like your last guy, he too square for you/He don't smack that ass and pull your hair for you” and, of course the ever charming “I'm a nice guy, but don't get confused, you gettin’ it” But at least Thick has a reasonable explanation for his questionable lyrics, right? Well, sort of.
“For me it’s about blurring the lines between men and women and how much we’re the same,” Thicke said in what sounds like a promising statement for Radio 1. “And then there’s the other side of it which is the blurred lines between a good girl and a bad girl, and even very good girls all have little bad sides to them.”
The censored version might have been deemed SFW, but it still has a lot of the same problems.

Robin Thicke wants to collaborate with Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.
Andy Murray. Wimbledon champion. US Open champion. Olympic champion. The greatest tennis player in Britain. Pop-star.
Yep, it looks as though old Muzza might be heading into the music business - if Robin Thicke has his way anyhow. The singer - whose smash hit single 'Blurred Lines' is the fastest selling track of the year - has revealed his plans to release a remix of the song featuring Murray himself. Discussing his plans on ITV's Lorraine programme, Robin explained, "I think I'm going to do a remix with Andy Murray," saying he would shoot a new video with a sports twist, specifically, "Beautiful girls in various tennis outfits with rackets strategically placed." We're not sure Murray would be up for this collaboration, given the state of his music taste.

Jay has already been paid for 1 million sales by Samsung, but they wont count as legitimate sales in the UK Album Chart
It looked as though Jay-Z's next album already had the number one spot wrapped up before it was even released, however the powers at the Official UK Chart have decided that if Jay-Z wants a number one album he's going to have to do it the old fashion way; by selling Magna Carta Holy Grail, rather than just giving it away.
The rapper signed a $5 million deal with phone manufacturers Samsung to provide fans with early access to his upcoming album as well as a free download to the rapper/businessman's newest release. Samsung has purchased a million copies of the album that will be distributed amongst a million Samsung smartphone users on July 4th and should the free downloads count in the charts then it will all but guaranteed it a place at No. 1. Only thing is, now that this won't be the case in the UK, will other countries follow suit?
The Official Charts Company said this week: “Music which consumers receive free of charge, either as physical releases or downloads, have never counted towards the Official Charts and this release will be no different. Legitimate purchases of Jay-Z's album will count, however, as usual.”
Pharrell Williams talks about what it was like to return to work on the soundtrack for 'Despicable Me 2'. He discusses his songs 'Happy' and 'Just A Cloud Away' and the new soul direction in a press interview.
'There's a lot of action and there's a lot of ups and downs but overall it was a more happier place', says Pharrell of the new music theme. 'And that's where the song 'Happy' comes from.' He is asked if the fact that the music has much more soul was deliberate. 'They wanted to be more soulful because it matched where they wanted to go', he replied, simply. On the song 'Just A Cloud Away', he has plenty of inspiring words to say. 'That is just the whisper of hope that everyone gets when things are not going right', he says. 'And if you believe in it and you keep pushing forward. then whatever it is, whatever adversity, is just a cloud and the sun is 'just a cloud away'.'
Miley Cyrus' new single is an R&B party anthem. Obviously.
Miley Cyrus has been in the headlines pretty much every day for the past couple of weeks. Her relationship with the Australian actor Liam Hemsworth is said to be on the rocks and her wedding plans in tatters, though the 20-year-old has dusted herself down and premiered the first single from her as-yet-untitled new album.
'We Can't Stop' - co-written by Cyrus, Mike Will and Rock City - is a sort of R&B party anthem that will no doubt feature in the upper echelons of the Billboard chart. Highlight lyrics include Miley wailing, "La-da-di-da-di, we like to party/Dancing with Molly, doing whatever we cant." With a vocal distortion effect, young Miley also says she's "shaking it like we at a strip club" and declares "It's my mouth, I can say what I want to." You sure can Miley, you sure can.
The singer first announced the single on the 'blue carpet' at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, confirming it would be the first single from the follow-up to 2010's Can't Be Tamed, set for release in the fall. "I feel like I can really be myself," Cyrus said of her next record, "I really have more of a connection of who I am, and I feel like I can maybe express that more in my music now."

The Voice have a stellar line-up of big name performers booked for the season
The producers of The Voice USA have arranged a varied line-up of music stars to perform on the show in the coming weeks, Reuters reports. Amongst them is Rod Stewart, who will be performing music from ‘Time,’ his first album of original material in over 10 years. He is scheduled to appear on the show on May 10, according to the report and he will be joined by Cee-Lo Green – formerly a judge on the show. Green is expected to perform his new song ‘Only You.’
On May 14, the show’s organisers have lined up a performance from Lady Antebellum. The Grammy award winners are currently promoting their album Golden and have been invited onto the show; currently one of US TV’s prime spots for promoting artists’ new material. The pop singer Robin Thicke will also be making an appearance on the same show as Lady Antebellum, as will rapper T.I. and singer / producer Pharrell, who recently guested on Daft Punk’s comeback track Get Lucky. The show averages around 14 million viewers across the two weekly shows.
The Voice is currently in its fourth season in the US, having recently drafted in Shakira and Usher to replace Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera. The season will draw to a close in June, when a winner will be chosen and rewarded with a recording contract.

Daft Punk have scored their first UK Number One single, with the disco floor-filler 'Get Lucky' doing the business for the French duo.
Daft Punk's infectious comeback single 'Get Lucky' has shot to the top of the UK Singles Chart over the weekend, with the Pharrell Williams and Nile Rogers-featuring track scoring a first number one hit for the French duo this side of the English Chanel. The reincarnated French maestro's chart success comes eight years since their last chart entry, and is their highest position to date, with their previous best effort 'One More Time' reaching the number two spot in 2000.
It only took a week for the foot-tapping disco-revival track to climb to the top of the charts, with the single entring the chart at number three last wek despite only being available for little over 24-hours. During that 24-hour gap, Spotify announced that 'Get Lucky' had become the most streamed song in the UK and the US over a 24-hour period in the company's five-year history. The streaming service predicts that the band's comeback album, Random Access Memories, will mirror this anticipation and turn out to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, streams of the year when it is released on 20 May (UK).
Not only did Daft Punk rock Coachella, apparently they rocked Spotify too.
The French electronic duo Daft Punk set a record this week with their newest single “Get Lucky”.
The track, which was released as a teaser of the band’s upcoming album, Random Access Memories, due to be released on May 21st, had the biggest streaming day on music service Spotify last Friday, the company reports, although it wouldn’t give the exact number of streams. The previous holder of the record was Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, which became an internet sensation earlier this year.
Daft Punk’s Get Lucky features rapper/producer Pharrell Williams and the album “Random Access Memories” will reportedly yield some additional exciting collaborations, including ones with including Strokes lead singer Julian Casablancas, Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox, Giorgio Moroder, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Academy Award-winning musician Paul Williams and Chilly Gonzales. Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have been busy performing and promoting the album ahead of its release, most recently playing a set at the infamous Coachella Music Festival. The official album release party is going to be held in a somewhat odd location though – an agricultural show in Wee Waa, Australia. Hey, we’re not questioning their methods, whatever they’re doing seems to be working out pretty well.

Listen to the new Daft Punk track, a belated disco classic?
The world has gone Daft Punk crazy this week. Their track ‘Get Lucky,’ featuring Pharrell and Nile Rodgers was debuted online and it’s gone down pretty well with most DP fans and reviewers. The vocals are unmistakeably Pharrell’s. The guitar riff is unmistakeably Nile’s. ‘Get Lucky’ is a lighter approach to the dance floor than we’re used to from Daft Punk, though (perhaps we’re just not playing it loud enough) as the French duo seem to be taking a more light-footed approach to the dance-floor.
The Guardian describes the track as having “a sort of all-encompassing timelessness to it – the sort of song that could work in a club and at a wedding reception… Get Lucky eschews the crunching electronics of their last album and the vocoder-lead future-disco of Discovery in favour of lithe "funk grooves" (apologies) that seem to have been transported directly from an underlit 70s dancefloor.” Channeling the essence of 70s disco, ‘Get Lucky’ is heavily indebted to Nile Rodgers’ contribution, though Pharrell’s vocal gives it a modern edge.
The track has been officially released on iTunes, ahead of their cleverly-marketed album, Random Access Memories, which is scheduled for release on May 20, 2013. The duo have drafted in even more collaborators for the rest of the album, NME reports, including Giorgio Moroder, Panda Bear, Chilly Gonzales and Todd Edwards.
Demi Moore is saying to all those women who've reached half a century on this earth: go out and have a good time while you still can. And all you naysayers out there who say she shouldn't, well, shut up.
She went out for a wild one in Miami at beachside barbecue, and was joined by Lenny Kravitz and Stacy Kiebler, amongst other cool friends. Her reported toy boy - art dealer Vito Schnabel, the 26-year-old son of artist and director Julian Schnabel - was also there to roll back the years (for her anyway). She was snapped by paps at the venue grinding around in her seat, but she didn't exactly make it difficult for the photo hungry freelancers and general public, as she gamely posed for pics at the reveller's delights. "She is definitely more down to party than Vito," an eyewitness told E! News, saying the two are definitely a couple. According to that source, the two were publicly making out at the event. The party at Miami's Soho Beach House was apparently sponsored by Chanel for Art.sy, and Will Ferrell, Stephen Dorff, Russell Simmons, Pharrell Williams,Naomi Campbell, Jeremy Piven and Adriana Lima were among other faces in the crowd.
Moore has come under some stick recently for dating someone just over half her age, and, the fact that her 24 year old daughter was snuggled up in bed cuddling one of her favourite pooches, has seemed to direct a lot of abuse to her for going out and having fun. We at Contact Music say go for it, sister.

Rihanna hit stop four on her 777 world tour, where the singer hits seven cities across the globe in seven different countries in, yeah you guessed it, seven days, when she hit up Paris last night.
The Parisians in attendance were in for quite a treat when RiRi hit the stage at Le Trianon, and those at the after party were in for an even bigger treat as the Barbadian beauty partied the night away with some famous faces and a few fans too. With P Diddy (who she casually bumped into at the airport - as you do), Akon and Pharrell Williams in attendance, Rihanna outshone the party she threw on day 3 in Stockholm, the party where she gave out shots of tequila for her waiting fans, by quite some way.
The 'Diamonds' singer is practically running on empty, flying between countries with as much emphasis on partying as hard as can be as she has on actually performing. Still, when she stopped off at the shops of Paris before her performance she wasn't buying Pro-Plus, but instead she went shopping for some sexy lingerie! You have to think what goes through that sleep-depraved girl's mind sometimes.
