Isle Of Wight Festival - 2015 Live Review

It's perhaps fitting that my prevailing memory of this year's Isle of Wight Festival will be guitars. This was after all the 45th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's legendary performance on the Island, something that was being widely celebrated by festival organiser John Giddings and his team across the site. Fender, for example, brought some specially designed guitars to the party for artists including You Me At 6 to play, and there was also a world record attempt for the most number of people in one place to be wearing a mask, the face in question was naturally Hendrix himself. Despite that backdrop, it was some of the guitarists who played across the weekend that demonstrated the power of the instrument and reinforced that guitar based rock isn't on its last legs as some have speculated over the past few years.

Isle Of Wight Festival 2015 Live Review

The festival got into full swing with a Stones-esque swagger on Friday afternoon when The Struts took to the Main Stage. Their enthusiasm signalled a continuation of their set from the previous year's festival, indeed they are an ideal opening act when you want to energise a crowd. Their appearance at Download the following day, will no doubt have had a similar effect. There seemed to be a Rolling Stones theme to many of the acts getting the festival underway. Over in the Big Top The Ruen Brothers covered 'Miss You' during their rousing set that was well received.

The first moment that sent a shiver down my spine this year was the Counting Crows though. The guitar line to 'Round Here' sent a wave of excitement across the main arena. It was a strong opening statement in a nine song set that featured the likes of 'Mr Jones', 'Miami', and 'Rain King' into which singer Adam Duritz dropped some Elbow lyrics as a nod of the hat to Guy Garvey. If Counting Crows' guitars weren't haunting enough, it was actually The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach whose riffs were the most powerful and elemental of the day. The dirty Blues grit of Auerbach's playing was like a roll of thunder that saw the heavens open to drench the crowd in torrential rain. While much of the set was dedicated to material culled from 'El Camino' and 'Brothers', rather than recent record 'Turn Blue', the band's graduation to a headlining slot was well deserved and warranted. The final song of the set 'Little Black Submarines', which builds from a delicate solo performance to a dramatic climax, utilised every trick in the book for The Black Keys' expanded touring band. If Patrick Carney's drums and Auerbach's guitars are the perfect union on record, it seems their live shows rightly now have the power to command top billing with the inclusion of bassist Richard Swift and keyboardist John Clement Wood.

Snoop Dog And Pharrell Explain The Hilarious Story Behind 'California Role'

Snoop Dogg Pharrell Williams Stevie Wonder

With Snoop Dog's 'Bush' set to hit shelves on 12th May 2015, Snoop and the record's producer, Pharrell Williams, took some time to give an interview about the creation of some of the tracks from the album. One of the main topics of conversation, however, turned out to be how they got Stevie Wonder to appear on the song 'California Role', and how the two musicians reacted to his arrival.

'California Role' was released on 5th May 2015'California Role' was released on 5th May 2015

Pharrell originally played the song 'California Role' while the two were recording the album in Miami, apparently because it was a song he had made that had never made it onto an album. Snoop knew he couldn't rap over the song, so he reached out to a friend of his to write some lyrics for him, before he realised that the song was calling out for Stevie Wonder.

Gaye Family Looking Deeper Into Pharrell's Work To Uncover Possible Plagiarism

So Pharrell has had enough trouble with the Gaye family to last him a lifetime. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be done with him quite yet. Pharrell Says He Could Never Rap Like Jay Z

Pharrell Williams Jay Z Daft Punk Robin Thicke

With pretty much the whole world at his feet having had the biggest selling single of the last few years, you could perhaps excuse Pharrell Williams for being immodest. But in a new interview he was very humble when comparing himself to one of his musical idols Jay-Z.

Speaking with Germany’s GQ Style magazine, the 41 year old said he would “sound braggy” if he were to rap like Jay-Z and use the same lyrics that he does. He believes that all artists should find their own style and that imitating someone else is unlikely to pay off.

Critics Of "The Voice's" Star-Making Power Are Missing The Point, Says Pharrell

Pharrell Williams Adam Levine

The Voice has taken more than a couple hits of criticism recently: it’s dull, it’s repetitive, it just can’t keep up in the ratings race. One of the biggest is that so far, NBC’s answer to American Idol has failed to produce launch a lasting career in music for any of its winners. But here’s what  Pharrell Williams, now in his second season as a panellist on the popular (sort of) format had to say to the critics – aka a group of journalists at the show’s Season 8 press conference.

Pharrell Wiliams
After just one season on the show, Pharrell is done with the criticism.

“I don’t understand why we have these interviews, and people ask the same question every time,” Williams said via The Wrap. And that wasn’t where the rant ended.

It’s time to talk about the Grammys – which, of course, would be impossible without talking about Taylor Swift and Sam Smith. The young powerhouses of pop came out on top with two and four nods, respectively. But they had to wait a while to celebrate this year. Instead of the typical primetime concert, the Grammys turned Nomination Day into an actual day-long event this year.

Early on, Sam Smith led the pack with four nods.

Starring Iggy Azalea, Beyonce and Smith himself as presenters and Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran as presenters, there was quite a lot of back patting going on. The 1990s marked a turning point for rap and hip hop, with plenty of artists making their mark on the scene with seminal releases. Nas was one of them, and now his landmark debut 'Illmatic' is being explored in a telling documentary, 'Nas: Time Is Illmatic'.

'Time Is Illmatic' explores the legacy of Nas' debut

Like many young black men exposed to rap culture, Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) was forced to live a life of fear and poverty as a youth, with guns and killings being a thing of daily terror. After his early collaborator Ill Will was shot dead and his brother injured in the process, it was time to write an album revealing the truth about ghetto culture - and the fear and rivalry that comes with it. 'Nas: Time Is Illmatic' explores his moving relationship with his parents against the grim backdrop of Queensbridge, as he rose up to become one of the greatest rapstars of all time.

Pharrell Williams And T.I. Talk Song Writing

Pharrell Williams T.I

Almost every musical writer has their own way of working on a project, and now Pharrell Williams and T.I. have revealed their differing writing processes. T.I.’s latest album ‘Paperwork’, was produced by Pharrell, who also worked on the album’s title track, after meeting over the course of T.I.’s album ‘I’m Serious’. T.I. explained this, saying: “I think the first time we met was the ‘I’m Serious’ session, if I ain’t mistaken, or maybe we may have met in passing at some parties here and there before then, but, you know, our first time really have the, I guess, elaborated extended conversation was the ‘I’m Serious’”.

T.I.'s new album, 'Paperwork', was produced by Pharell Williams

While Williams take a more traditional approach to musical writing, i.e. using pen and paper, he was shocked to discover that T.I. had a remarkably different process. "That's when I first saw you, like, how you wrote. 'What's this guy doing? He's just standing there.'" Williams explained. The process in question, is how T.I. choses to do all his musical writing in his head. "Jay [Z] was the only other person that I knew that, that, did that. Cos I always thought that was an anomaly." This came even more of a shock to Williams as the process took place when T.I. was around 19 and he himself was around 30.
