Peter Jackson urged Andy Serkis to play the title creature in his King Kong remake after the actor mesmerised him with his rapid Gollum body movements in The Lord Of The Rings.

Serkis was hired by Jackson to act out all of Gollum's complex acrobatics and interactions with other characters before he was replaced by a computer-generated image.

And Jackson knew immediately that Serkis would be able to lend the same skills to his dream King Kong project by providing the rapid movements of the giant ape - before being digitally blown up and made to look like a gorilla.

Serkis recalls, "During RETURN OF THE KING pick-ups, Peter started showing me pictures of this gorilla named SNOWFLAKE one day.

"It dawned on me why he was showing me these pictures, and by the end of the conversation he said, 'We'd like you to come and work on King Kong.' We'd developed a shorthand for working on Gollum so it made sense."
