Cinderella Man Review

Weak
Tickets to Ron Howard's period boxing drama Cinderella Man should come with bootstraps. That way we literally could join the film's heavyweight hero, dutifully played by Russell Crowe, as he sifts through the wreckage left by bill collectors and broken bones to climb his way out of Dickens-level poverty and see the light at the end of his personal tunnel of despair.

American audiences adore underdog stories, particularly those tied to sports. From Rocky to Seabiscuit, we devour worthy longshots given a chance to reclaim such precious commodities as pride, significance, or the undying love of family. That, and anything with Darth Vader in it.

With Friends Like These... Review

Weak
Hollywood farces are always hard to pull off, and this one-joke movie proves increasingly frustrating despite a few bright moments. Robert Costanzo stars as an out-of-work character actor in L.A. who gets the call to read for the part of Al Capone in an upcoming Scorsese film. Of course, he blabs to all his friends and soon enough, they're all up for the part. Most of the film's scenes are predicated by "You gotta promise not to tell anyone..." and of course they invariably do. But backstabbing has never been more repetitive. By the time Scorsese makes his cameo appearance, give yourself a point if you still care who gets the part. Watch for Bill Murray in a stellar yet miniscule role.

Bewitched Review

Terrible
Heed my advice before seeing Bewitched: It may fly like a witch and twitch like a witch, but it's certainly not the beloved Bewitched.

While its trailers make you believe the small screen gem has been reincarnated from its TV Land graveyard, those expecting a proper big screen revival will be sorely disappointed. In fact, the sisters Ephron have carefully crafted a film that tries and succeeds at not resembling the original. Too bad the parts they took out are all the best bits. The finished product is new and different, but it's too predictable and remarkably devoid of anything entertaining or enduring.
