The Weinstein Co., expecting to face protests from members of Scientology over its Paul Thomas Anderson film The Master , has increased security at tonight's (Thursday) premiere of the movie in New York, MovieLine.com reported today. The New York Post , citing unnamed sources, reported earlier this week that Scientologists have been inundating the distributor with "strange calls." The film stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a cult leader supposedly modeled after Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and Joaquin Phoenix as a disciple who becomes disenchanted with The Movement. The Post quoted its sources as saying that the Weinstein Company has been receiving so many crank calls that some members of the film's team have already hired personal security. Last weekend, The Master won top awards for director Anderson and actors Hoffman and Phoenix at the Venice Film Festival
