Carried Away (1996) Review


Weak
It's not every day we get full frontal nudity from Dennis Hopper and Amy Irving -- much less in the same scene. And thank God for that. But behind the borderline creepiness of the movie lies a tepid story: Hopper and Irving are rural types carrying on a tentative romance. But student Amy Locane (who specializes in this role) comes into Hopper's classroom, and before 10 minutes are up, she's naked and bedding him in the barn. Eventually this turns out badly for all parties, as you might imagine. Worst, possibly, for the audience.

Scorcher Review

Ripped from today's theater screens comes the latest direct-to-DVD knockoff, Scorcher, a tepid reworking of The Core.

Say what you will about using lame source material, Scorcher is laughably bad in its own right. As with Core, our meddling has caused some kind of tectonic trouble, and if the gap between two plates opens wider than 44 centimeters (yeah, whatever), then we will literally have "hell on earth" as earthquakes and volcanoes sprout up all over the planet. Uh huh. And so our hero geologists (including John Rhys-Davies, whoa nelly!), under the direction of President Rutger Hauer(!!!), are tasked with finding a solution. Naturally, that involves setting off a nuclear bomb somewhere. In the case of Scorcher, it means detonating the nuke in central Los Angeles. Sounds like an improvement to me, but whatever, after quietly evacuating the tens of millions of people who live there, a wrench involving our military co-hero (Mark Dacascos) and a kidnapped daughter gets thrown at us, not to mention crossed signals between the military dudes tasked with getting the nukes set just so.

Hallmark, where are you? This Vanessa Redgrave film is as overripe as anything Redgrave has made in the last two decades, a sickly sweet something about communicating with angels via Morse code. Redgrave, a half-crazy widow, takes in a troubled and bratty youth (Trevor Morgan), who lost his mother in accident. Together they become the scampiest couple in town, hanging out at her freaky lighthouse. I guess if you're looking for a good cry, A Rumor of Angels has tears galore for you to savor. Not much else, alas.
