Robin Wright Jon Hamm Paul Giamatti

Ari Folman’s long awaited follow up to Waltz With Bashir has finally arrived; the Israeli film maker plays with live-action, animation and fantasy in a truly original way with ‘The Congress’, which sees Robin Wright play a version of herself.

Robin WrightRobin Wright lets herself be recorded for future use

'The Amazing Spider-Man 4' Won't Be Directed By Marc Webb

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Marc Webb Jamie Foxx Paul Giamatti

Marc Webb has announced that he won't direct the fourth instalment in his Amazing Spider-Man reboot. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may have not even been released yet but the American filmmaker wanted his fans to know that after next year's third movie, he'll be taking a step back from the web-slinging superhero.

Marc Webb

"I'd like to be involved as a consultant", Webb explained, adding "I've already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I've had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it'll be the time to find something else," he told The Daily Beast at SXSW.

New 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer Looks Awesome, But How Will It Do Against 'The Winter Soldier?'

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Jamie Foxx Paul Giamatti Martin Sheen Sally Field

There’s one big piece of news on the entertainment circuit that you should be paying attention to: how cool is the new Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer. According to popular opinion, it is with stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone that the franchise has really found its footing and this second film from Garfield’s trilogy looks pretty much amazing, judging from the trailer, released yesterday.

Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Spider-Man 2 Still
The special effects look particularly gorgeous.

We already know that the masked superhero will be taking on a trio of The Green Goblin (Chris Cooper) The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Electro (Jamie Foxx,) the latter of whom has a particularly cool scene in the trailer, as he goes after Spider-Man with whips of static electricity. Not to mention that his one line in the trailer is said with enough power to convert any non-believers in Foxx’s aptitude for the role. The point of the trailer is fairly obvious: Electro is coming and the lights are going out. In fact, that could make for some sneaky real-world parallels and maybe a power/electricity analogy here and there, which Marvel have obviously caught on to.

From Action To Art House: Paul Giamatti Adds A Touch Of Excellence To This Year's Upcoming Flicks

Paul Giamatti Paul Rudd Chiwetel Ejiofor Tom Hanks Andrew Garfield

Paul Giamatti is not the sort of actor who gets typecast easily, his first major success was his role in 'American Splendor' in 2001 for which he won an award for Best Breakthrough Performance from National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, among many other nominations, for portraying comic book author Harvey Pekar. His success burned brighter when he won more than 10 accolades for playing depressed wino Miles Raymond in 2004 comedy drama 'Sideways' as well as being nominated for a Golden Globe, and he was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in boxing flick 'Cinderella Man' opposite Russell Crowe. Next year will no doubt bring in a few shiny new prizes for his latest projects, many of which are definite must-sees.

2013 has seen the Oscar nominee get involved with a variety of upcoming movie projects including animation, romance and superhero action - and we have to say we're glad to see this gifted artiste stamping some of his humour and intensity all over our movie theatres.

Peter Landesman's directorial feature debut 'Parkland' is due for release imminently (October 4th 2013) and sees Giamatti portray the often forgotten Abraham Zapruder; the amateur photographer who unwittingly videoed the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy and whose footage has been seen by millions across the globe. On researching the role, Giamatti explained in an interview that there was a lot of information about Zapruder in the script, but he also learned a lot about his speech and body language from footage of him before and after the assassination. He will star alongside Zac Efron, Marcia Gay Harden and Billy Bob Thornton.

The movie is due to be released in just a few short days on October 4. In it, Giamatti takes on the role of Abraham Zapruder, an American clothing manufacturer, who ended up being at in the wrong place at the wrong time and became the accidental chronicler of the assassination. In the below interview, Giamatti talks history and authenticity and explains how the filming process was different this time and why.

Giamatti takes on the role of accidental journalist Abraham Zapruder.

“I’m interested in American history and I’ve always been interested in this event in particular, so I was very aware of who he was, but I knew nothing about him” Giamatti says, when asked about his reason to choose the part of Zapruder. “So there was something cool about the idea of playing him, because he’s such a strangely anonymous figure, but so important.”

On November 22nd 1963 in Dallas, Texas, the hugely adored President John F. Kennedy was shot to death as he arrived in the city with First Lady Jackie Kennedy. A women's clothing manufacturer named Abraham Zapruder had no idea of the events that would unfold as he set up his camera preparing for Kennedy's arrival; no idea that his footage would be seen by millions repeatedly as the only visual evidence for what took place that day. Few people know anything about this man, or indeed the other people who ended up becoming involved in this historic tragedy, such as the doctors and nurses who were forced to perform immediate life-saving attempts even with their initial shock and devastation, and the family of alleged killer US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald.

This historical drama tells the stories of the lesser known figures who became involved with one of the most famous assassinations in the history of the world ahead its 50th anniversary. It has been directed and written by Peter Landesman who is best known for his sex slavery article 'The Girls Next Door' which was published in the New York Times. 'Parkland' will be released in UK theatres on November 8th 2013.

Paul Giamatti & Paul Rudd Are Just Trying To Be Better People In The 'All Is Bright' Trailer [Trailer]

Paul Giamatti Paul Rudd Amy Landecker

Paul Giamatti stars as the recently parolled, hard on his luck former thief Dennis, a Canadian ex-con who has decided to leave behind his long history of crime in order to prove to the people that matter to him that he is a better man. But life out there is hard for a bad guy trying to turn good, and when the people he cares about have stopped caring in him (or have been led to believe that he is dead), things become even harder as he tries to stay on the straight and narrow for good this time.

All is Bright
Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd star in the dark comedy

The film follows Dennis as he returns home to New York from a stint in prison, only to find out that his wife Therese (Amy Landecker) has moved on and no longer wants anything to do with him. To make matters worse, the infant daughter that Dennis left behind when he was thrown behind bars has now grown into a young girl and thanks to Therese he can no longer see his daughter again. Why? Because Therese told her that her father died after a long, painful fight with cancer. This may be a Christmas-set movie, but in case you haven't guessed it is hardly the next Home Alone.

Turbo Reviews - Will Ryan Reynolds Race His Way Into Families' Hearts?

Ryan Reynolds Paul Giamatti

Like many animated family movies, Turbo’s premise is simple: a snail dreams of being the fastest mollusc in the world, and intends to prove it by winning the Indie 500. There was a time when Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar could do no wrong; Toy Story, Shrek, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille fooled people into thinking every animation film was, by virtue, amazing.

Ryan ReynoldsReynolds provides the voice for our lead snail, Theo

Recently those times have changed, and we’re getting a little bored of what the studios have to offer. Wreck it Ralph provided some welcome relief, focussing upon the genre that essentially predicated animated cinema. So does Turbo have enough? We’ve already seen Despicable Me 2 and Monster’s University divide the critics this summer after all.

Solomon Northup was a regular New York resident who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. He was rescued 12 years later. 172 years on, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is an early Oscar contender for his turn as Northup in Steve McQueen’s 12 Days a Slave, which has a new trailer.

12 Years A Slave: The Slavery Movie We've All Been Waiting For

Chiwetel Ejiofor Steve McQueen Michael Fassbender Brad Pitt Michael K. Williams Benedict Cumberbatch Paul Giamatti Quvenzhane Wallis Sarah Paulson Paul Dano

Films - or should we say writers and directors - that dare to tackle the issue of slavery come rarely, and when they due, they face an increased level of scrutiny due to the sensitive subject matter. They are necessary though; teaching the world of the horrors it has faced will ensure they never happen again, or so they say.

Chiwetel EjioforChiwetel Ejiofor could be in for the biggest role of his life

Django Unchained came and went, as Quentin Tarantino’s ability to satirize and trivialize some of history’s most controversial times slowly turns into a trilogy of movies. Mixed reviews and a cavalier use of the ‘N’ word meant people saw it as less of a history lesson and more of a taboo comedy, which is exactly what it was.

Is '12 Years A Slave' The Movie Django Should Have Been? [Trailer]

Chiwetel Ejiofor Michael Fassbender Steve McQueen Brad Pitt Paul Dano Paul Giamatti Michael K. Williams

The trailer for Steve McQueen's hugely anticipated historical drama 12 Years A Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man tricked into slavery in the 1840s, has rolled out online.

Also featuring Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Paul Giamatti, the movie appears to be a far more hard-hitting than many were expecting with some writers suggesting it tells the real story of the pre-civil war period in the United States of America, as opposed to, say, Quentin Taratino's Django Unchained.

Ejiofor plays a free black New Yorker who is sold into slavery after being lured to Washington DC with the promise of a well-paid job playing fiddle in a circus.

Tom Hanks Walt Disney Picture - First Still From 'Saving Mr Banks'

Tom Hanks Emma Thompson Paul Giamatti Jason Schwartzman Colin Farrell

We love the Tom Hanks Walt Disney picture, it’s not quite the transformation we expected – we can still see Hanks in it – but it has certainly whetted the appetite for Saving Mr Banks: the upcoming biographical drama about the production of the popular Walt Disney film Mary Poppins.

Next to Hanks – who appears to be towing the company line, waving to fans – is a rather disgruntled Emma Thompson, who plays P.L. Travers in the film. Her struggle, which stems from Disney’s desire to adapt her novel, is a central plot point from the film. 'Saving Mr Banks' – also starring Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Colin Farrell - is due out on January 17.

Downton Abbey's U.S Contingent Swells Following Paul Giamatti Addition

Paul Giamatti Shirley Maclaine

Keeping one eye firmly on the U.S market, where the show is arguably more of a hit than in the U.K (where it is still appreciated, but not with as much fandom), Downton Abbey's producers have made a shrewd move by getting Sideways star Paul Giamatti on board to play the “maverick” brother of Cora, Countess of Grantham.

Gareth Neame, managing director of Carnival Films which makes the programme, said, “We're excited that Paul Giamatti will be joining us on Downton to play Cora's brother Harold, the rather free-spirited uncle to Mary and Edith. We can't wait to see him work alongside Shirley Maclaine, who are both sure to upset the Grantham's apple cart in this year's Christmas Day episode.”

The death of Dan Stevens's Matthew Crawley, who was heir to the Grantham estate, shocked the viewing public. He died in a car accident after visiting his wife and their firstborn in hospital. Sorry, spoilers. But you’re not reading this unless you’ve seen the lot, are you? Downton has been an unprecedented success; it is the highest-rating drama in US broadcaster PBS's 40-year history and has won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

Downton Abbey Will Play Host To Paul Giamatti - And Shirley Maclaine (Again!)

Paul Giamatti Elizabeth McGovern Shirley Maclaine Dan Stevens Jessica Brown-Findlay

Paul Giamatti who has starred in such films as Sideways,The Illusionist, Rock of Ages and The Hangover Part II will feature in British drama Downton Abbey. He will play Lady Cora's (Elizabeth McGovern) visiting American brother, Harold.

Last series ended with yet more tragedy with Matthew (Dan Stevens) following in the wake of Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) and 'going to a better place' i.e. the bright light at the end of the acting tunnel: Hollywood! Both died after having a child and both have left distraught spouses. Will Branson and Lady Mary overcome their differences and possibly get together? It's only a possibility but it does seem to be the sort of dog-legged plotline writer Julian Fellowes appreciates.

Pail Giamatti is merely one of many American actors who will take up a part on ITV's hit show. We've already witnessed Shirley Maclaine appear as Cora's mother who according to Carnival Films' managing director Graham Naeme will return this season. This is one of the reasons the cast and crew are so excited about Giamatti's involvement in the drama, according to Naeme "We can't wait to see him work alongside Shirley Maclaine, who are both sure to upset the Grantham's apple cart in this year's Christmas Day episode".

'The Amazing Spider-Man 3 & 4' Are On Their Way As Andrew Garfield Signs Up For Two More Spidey Films

Andrew Garfield Paul Giamatti Emma Stone Jamie Foxx Spider Man

Andrew Garfield has committed himself to the Amazing Spider-Man movie franchise by agreeing to appear in a further two films with Sony Pictures. The production company announced the franchise's expansion into four movies in a statement release on Monday (June 17), although no other information was released about the film, so feel free to let your imagination run wild.

Garfield is going to go one further than Tobey Maguire did in his turn as Spiderman and the actor is already filming the finishing touches for the second Amazing Spider-Man film, which is due out in May next year. The studio also announced that the films will be released in relatively quick succession, just as the second film is swiftly wrapping up with filming. The studio announced that the third and fourth instalments of the film will be release on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018 respectively.

Before we can begin to think about the third and fourth films, let take the time to relish what we have in store when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is released. Garfield's Spidey has all kinds of trouble to deal with this time round, with his personal problems going to heck when Peter Parker's other love interest, Mary Jane Watson (Shailene Woodley) shows up, much to the displeasure of Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. If his personal life wasn't hectic enough, there's two baddies around this time for him to battle, with Paul Giamatti playing a gangster-fied version of Rhino and Jamie Foxx set to send sparks flying as Electro. The fittingly named Marc Webb will return to direct too.

Andrew Garfield Spider Man Jamie Foxx Paul Giamatti

Whilst filming for the sequel of 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man is still underway, the bosses at Sony Pictures have already decided that they will extend the film franchise for another two film, at the very least, after it was announced that a third and fourth follow-on to the superhero movie have already been place in pre-production.

In an announcement made by Sony Pictures bosses on Monday (June 17), current Spidey Andrew Garfield has agreed to stop on for the planned films and filming for the movies will beging almost as soon as Spidey 2 has been distributed. The studio announced that the third and fourth instalments of the film will be release on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018 respectively.

In slightly more current news, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due in cinemas by May 2, 2014, and features a similar make-up to its predecessor in terms of personel worKing on the project. Like the 2012 movie, Garfield will return as the web-slinging hero and the fittingly named Marc Webb will return to direct. Emma Stone returns as Gwen Stacy, with Shailene Woodley joining the cast as Peter Parker's other love interest, Mary Jane Watson. Chris Cooper will appear as Norman Osborn and Dane DeHaan will play his son Harry, with Paul Giamatti and Jamie Foxx set to portray the two villainous roles as Rhino and Electro respectively.

'The Amazing Spider Man 2' filming continued to get underway in New York on Sunday (May 26th 2013) leaving behind it a trail of destruction on the City streets.

A particularly devastating scene was spotted being filmed, with a mass of crashed, overturned and ablaze vehicles littering the set. Andrew Garfield was in his Spider Man garb as he addressed onlookers from atop a smashed up car through a loudspeaker. He is also seen approaching a young boy in a copycat outfit who, after what looks like a pep talk with Peter Parker's alter-ego, subsequently flees the riotous scene. The scene is the latest of on set sneak peeks that have slowly been accumulating after snaps emerged of 'Django Unchained' star Jamie Foxx showing off his new look as the blue villain Electro and Paul Giamatti from 'Cinderella Man' making a fierce appearance as equally evil baddie The Rhino. Meanwhile, Emma Stone has revealed a MAJOR spoiler about her own character (though we won't reveal it for those who haven't read the prophetic comics).

Jamie Foxx Has Got The Blues As Electro In 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Jamie Foxx Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Chris Cooper Dane DeHaan Paul Giamatti Felicity Jones

Everyone got a glimpse of Jamie Foxx as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in some newly released pictures from the set of the movie.

In the stills, Foxx is seen wearing creepy blue makeup and a grey hood. This means that the movie will significantly deviate from the original version of the villain, which was portrayed wearing a bright green suit with a yellow lightning mask. According to the LA Times, this portrayal of Electro will more closely resemble his Ultimate incarnation, which also has a different backstory – being the result of genetic experimentation, instead of a power line accident. It isn’t clear yet how much of the back story the producers plan to keep, but Foxx did give the reasons behind the choice of costume in an interview with Blackfilm back in December: “They want to have it more grounded and not as comic book-y, so it won’t be green and yellow,” he said. “They want to try new things, like a liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happen [sic]. How did he become this way? So, it will be some new stuff.”

Sounds pretty cool to us. The sequel to the 2012 film is due in May of next year and, as previously announced, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be reprising their roles. Additionally, Shailene Woodley will join the cast as Mary Jane Watson, Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan as Norman Osborn and his son Harry, Paul Giamatti reportedly as villain the Rhino, and Colm Feore and Felicity Jones in roles yet to be announced.

New Trailer Revealed For 'Romeo And Juliet', Starring Douglas Booth (Trailer & Pictures)

Douglas Booth Hailee Steinfeld Paul Giamatti Damian Lewis Ed Westwick Julian Fellowes Zola Jesus

Douglas Booth as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet in Romeo And JulietDouglas Both as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet in Romeo And Juliet

It’s been a while since anyone’s attempted to pull off a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic doomed love story Romeo & Juliet. We suspect it’s because Baz Luhrmann did such a bang up job of it back in the 90’s that many have been simply too terrified to try and better it. However, with Douglas Booth and Paul Giamatti among the stars, director Carlo Carlei is probably confident that his 2013 version of the ancient play has the chops to do the original script justice especially with the Oscar winning 'Downton Abbey' creator Julian Fellowes adapting the screenplay.

Featuring the welcome voice of Zola Jesus on the backing soundtrack, the extended trailer for Carlei’s work has been revealed and apart from revealing that almost all the young actors in it are impossibly pretty, it also has a touch of a gothic feel about it, with dark shades adorning most of the clips shown and the infamous masked ball focused on as the first place the pair meet. 'Gossip Girl' star Ed Westwick also makes an appearance in the movie as the vengeful cousin of Juliet, Tybalt in his first role since leaving the show.

Romeo and Juliet Trailer

Romeo and Juliet are two young lovers whose lives together cannot escape their inevitable tragic fate. They are from opposite feuding families; Romeo is a Montague while Juliet is a Capulet. They meet and fall immediately in love when Romeo sneaks into the Capulet family ball and they soon vow to be married. Unfortunately, their happy matrimony does not last long when Romeo is forced to kill a relative of hers who challenges him and he is subsequently banished from Verona. Juliet, meanwhile, is being forced to marry another man against her wishes. Blinded by her misery, she accepts the help of Friar Laurence who offers to help her fake her own death so that she and Romeo may elope. However, after a cruel twist of fate, Romeo fails to receive word of the plan and discovers his wife apparently dead in her tomb. The grief that ensues becomes the deadly fate for this star-crossed couple.

Turbo Trailer

Turbo is a regular garden snail who, unlike his friends, is bored of living his life at a. well, snail's pace. As much as his friends and family try to convince him that his dreams of becoming a super-fast racer are, frankly, ridiculous and utterly fruitless, he refuses to give up hope and makes a wish that is set to change his life forever. After accidently finding himself taking a ride on the roof of the racing car of one of the fastest racers in the world, he finds himself flying into a tank of nitrous oxide which transforms his genetic code and makes him one of the fastest moving creatures on Earth, putting other wannabe snail racers to shame.

'Turbo' is the hilarious and delightful new animated movie from DreamWorks about the power of hope and determination in striving to achieve your dreams. It is David Soren's directorial feature film debut, though he has worked on a string of other animated flicks in other departments. He also co-wrote 'Turbo' with Darren Lemke ('Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Shrek Forever After') and Robert D. Siegel ('The Wrestler', 'Big Fan'). It is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas this Autumn on October 18th 2013.

Tribeca Film Festival 2013 Line-Up Includes Paul Rudd's Christmas Tree Caper

Paul Rudd Paul Giamatti Ethan Hawke Tribeca Film Festival

The 2013 Tribeca Festival has revealed its line-up for the forthcoming event, the film festival rising from humble origins in 2002 to become one of the largest in America – as proven by the appearance of some star names in its line-up of films this year, including Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti and Ethan Hawke, among others.

Among those notable among the glut of announcements for the festival, which takes place from April 17th until April 28th in Manhattan, is Almost Christmas, which stars Giamatti and Rudd. The film sees the pair star as two good for nothing types who come up with a get rich quick scheme for Christmas, namely selling Christmas trees. There’s an issue with this though – Rudd’s character has just stolen Giamatti’s wife. Conflict awaits.

Elsewhere, Hawke is starring in the third installment of the Before… films. Before Sunrise came out in 1995 with the second, Before Sunset, coming out in 2004. Now Before Midnight is going to be screening in Tribeca, with the two main characters Jesse and Celine (played by Hawke and Delpy) moving to Europe whilst they continue their usual on again off again deep meaningful relationship thing. Another interesting one is Adult World, which sees Emma Roberts character have to take a job at a sex shop, where she encounters the eccentric writer played by John Cusack.

Turbo Trailer

Turbo is a garden snail with big dreams of becoming the speediest snail in the world. He is seen as a figure of embarrassment among his snail community, his family and his friends for rejecting their slow and steady way of life but is nonetheless determined, through an intensive training routine, to become like his all-time favourite idol, Guy Gagne; a Indianapolis 500 racing champion for IndyCar. One day, his treasured dreams seem set to be realised when, following a freak incident, he develops an incredible superpower that allows him to move at a mind-blowing pace giving him the chance to truly compete at the IndyCar races and win the Indy 500 champion title for himself.

'Turbo' is a wonderful animated family comedy from DreamWorks about determination, hope and achieving your dreams. It is the feature directorial debut of David Soren who has previously worked on 'Shark Tale', 'Madagascar 2' and 'Shrek' in various departments and who also acted as a co-writer for the film alongside Darren Lemke ('Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Shrek Forever After') and Robert D. Siegel ('The Wrestler', 'Big Fan'). It's a delightful little tale due for release much later in the year on October 18th 2013.

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzman, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson

Cosmopolis Trailer

In a luxury stretched limousine on the way to get a haircut from his father's barber, the ambitious 28-year-old billionaire that is Eric Packer enters chaos and anarchy as the streets of Manhattan begin to collapse around him. His future, once apparently carved in stone, becomes uncertain as political protestors and violent rioters attack the city from the inside following a visit from the President of the United States. Eric sees his treasured empire melt before his eyes as he looks on, unable to act or give out orders; he soon begins to understand, through a series of clues dotted about New York through the confusion, that the disturbances are leading to his imminent execution.

Rock Of Ages Review

Very Good
This raucous trawl through 80s power ballads, rock anthems and gigantic hair is a lot of fun, partly because it throws so many big stars into against-type roles in which they get to sing and dance. But the plot couldn't be any thinner or it wouldn't exist at all.

Small-town girl Sherrie (Hough) takes the bus to 1987 Hollywood to become a rock star. There she meets Drew (Boneta), who has the same dream and works in the famed Bourbon Room on the Sunset Strip. He convinces the owner (Baldwin) to hire her as a barmaid just as diva-rocker Stacee Jaxx (Cruise) comes to play a major gig. Buzzing around him are a Rolling Stone journalist (Akerman) wanting an interview and a right-winger (Zeta-Jones) trying to protect the children from the evils of rock-n-roll.

Cosmopolis Review

Good
Artful, intelligent and wilfully obtuse, Cronenberg uses his skill to hold our interest through this oddity of a film. But it's difficult to engage with such fragmented film, especially when its big themes are hidden in overwritten dialog.

Eric (Pattinson) is a 28-year-old billionaire who wants a haircut. As he climbs into his high-tech limousine, his security chief (Durand) warns about traffic problems because the US President's in Manhattan. En route, Eric continues his routine, meeting his computer expert (Baruchel), theoretician (Morton) and financial advisor (Hampshire), who talks to him during his daily prostate exam.

He also sees his new wife (Gadon) several times, has sex with two women (Binoche and McKenzie), endures an anarchists' riot, gets a pie in the face and confronts a man (Giamatti) who wants to kill him.

The Last Station Review

Good
A double love story based on real events from the life of Leo Tolstoy, this period film combines comedy and emotion in a way that's always entertaining, even if it sometimes feels camp and contrived.

Valentin (McAvoy) is a young Tolstoyan in 1910 assigned by the movement's leader Chertkov (Giamatti) to keep an eye on Leo Tolstoy (Plummer) and his sceptical wife Sofya (Mirren). But what Valentin finds is a lively, loving marriage that's strong enough to include opposing views. This isn't good enough for Chertkov, who moves to get Leo to change his will to leave everything to the movement. Which of course enrages Sofya. Meanwhile, Valentin is experiencing his first flush of love with a Tolstoyan commune resident (Condon).

Confidence Review

Extraordinary
If Heist held your attention and The Score kept you guessing, you need to see Confidence, James Foley's stunningly original sting movie that puts the majority of sting movies to shame. Who knew that Foley, the man responsible for brainless thrillers like The Corruptor and Fear, would helm a genre film that outwits even those from acclaimed filmmakers David Mamet and Frank Oz?

Confidence has triple the pizzazz of any caper movie released in the past several years. To say that it keeps you guessing would be misleading; the film has so many twists, turns, and reveals them in such an order that you don't even know where to start guessing. You'll need a scorecard to keep everything in order. Yet, remarkably, in the end, everything adds up without any apparent plot holes. It's astonishing.

Paycheck Review

OK
Sci-fi fans will see clear similarities between John Woo's action/thriller Paycheck and Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall (1991). Both deal with memory and identity, as adapted from stories by author Philip K. Dick. Both star thousand-watt Hollywood celebrities (Ben Affleck here, Governor Schwarzenegger in Recall) in roles that ask little from them. And, most disappointingly, both shun an intellectual and sturdy drama that would fit the subject matter perfectly, choosing action and cornball dialogue instead.

"My life is nothing but highlights," confesses Mike Jennings (Affleck), a genius computer hacker who trades big cash for small chunks of his own memory. Jennings gets rich by dissecting massive programs and passing the goods onto rival companies - at which point, all recent activity is erased from his brain.

Storytelling Review

Excellent
Writer-director Todd Solondz has a knack for making us feel downright uncomfortable. He did it in his twisted debut, Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995), with a young Brendan Sexton III announcing his intentions to rape an even younger Heather Matarazzo. He did it in Happiness (1998), in nearly every scene. And he's providing more squirm-inducing moments in Storytelling, a film with less intensity than Happiness, but with a continuing streak of intellectually challenging dialogue and unforgiving subject matter.

Aside from Solondz's decidedly risky topics, his format in Storytelling takes chances. It presents two separate shorts, entitled "Fiction" and "Non-fiction," with no obvious connection between the two. The only true thread is that both comment on the telling of tales, the shifting of points of view, and the way most people in Solondz's suburban landscapes constantly paddle their painful lives upstream.

Cinderella Man Review

OK
Tickets to Ron Howard's period boxing drama Cinderella Man should come with bootstraps. That way we literally could join the film's heavyweight hero, dutifully played by Russell Crowe, as he sifts through the wreckage left by bill collectors and broken bones to climb his way out of Dickens-level poverty and see the light at the end of his personal tunnel of despair.

American audiences adore underdog stories, particularly those tied to sports. From Rocky to Seabiscuit, we devour worthy longshots given a chance to reclaim such precious commodities as pride, significance, or the undying love of family. That, and anything with Darth Vader in it.

American Splendor Review

Excellent
Comic book heroes like Spider-Man and The Hulk get all the press. Hey, what about the little guy?

Harvey Pekar is the ultimate little guy -- not just in the comics world, where his American Splendor has been an underground phenomenon for decades, but in real life, as he has held down a steady gig as a file clerk in a Cleveland VA hospital since the beginning of the known universe.

Planet Of The Apes Review

Weak

Without the faintest hint of director Tim Burton's uniquely uncanny style, "Planet of the Apes" version 2.0 feels like nothing more than a generic (albeit overblown) sci-fi summer movie -- and a forgettably mediocre one at that.

A passionless, elementary endeavor of wow effects and a yawn plot (which has been reinvented from the 1968 original), the picture opens circa 2029 with astronaut Mark Wahlberg working on a space station, training chimps to pilot one-man pods into electrical storms encountered in deep space.

After losing contact with one chimp in a rather ominous anomaly, Wahlberg establishes his maverick personality (which soon fades into a vanilla version of your standard action hero) by swiping a pod against orders to go rescue him. Once inside the storm, our hero is sucked into a wormhole that turns his helm dead and spits him out to crash land on a faraway world in the distant future where -- as if you didn't know -- a brutal, medieval society of evolved simians enslaves primitive humans as labor and pets.

Cradle Will Rock Review

Very Good

A wonderfully ambitious, old-school ensemble piece, very much in the can-do spirit of the community to which it pays homage, "Cradle Will Rock" is a politically-undertoned dramedy about theater, censorship, ambition, apprehension, oppression, Orson Welles and the Great Depression.

Written and directed by Tim Robbins -- never one to shy away from cause-fueled entertainment -- this passionate labor of love celebrates and fictionalizes a legendary moment in American theater, when the government shut down the performance of a musical produced by the Works Progress Administration -- and the actors, at the risk of losing their jobs during the bleakest economic season in U.S. history, staged it anyway in a show of inspiring solidarity.

The play was entitled "The Cradle Will Rock" and its story of a greedy industrialist taken down by the organized working man made a lot of federal bureaucrats see red -- as in communism.

Man On The Moon Review

Good

Seeing the biopic "Man On the Moon" is like being at a seance in a comedy club.

Director Milos Forman and star Jim Carrey conjure up the spirit of their subject -- Andy Kaufman, that most eccentric of professional oddballs, that patron saint of the practical joke -- with such effective Ouija-dom that at times is as if his ghost has taken over the film.

All the buzz you've probably heard about Carrey's performance is true. A Kaufman aficionado from way back, he does more than just mimic Andy's mannerisms and repeat his routines -- it's like Kaufman has slipped inside Carrey's skin (shall I compare thee to "Being John Malkovich"?) and won a battle for control of his body. There's still a wee bit of Carrey peeking out, but that sliver his own style serves to create a fascinating Kaufman-Carrey alloy.
