Director Paul Feig then leapt to Jones' defence with the hashtag #LoveForLeslieJ, after she re-posted a number of the offending comments.
Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones has described the “personal hell” she’s endured after suffering a string of racist and misogynistic tweets, with director Paul Feig sparking a backlash movement against the trolls in coming to her defence.
The re-boot, which finally hit cinemas this week after months of internet attacks by people attacking the all-female cast, has been arguably the most talked-about film of 2016 and clearly continues to anger a small section of the internet despite the good reviews it has received.

When producers announced that they were remaking the 1984 action-comedy classic Ghostbusters with a cast of women, the internet predictably erupted in a barrage of abuse. But the cast and crew did their best to ignore it.
Ghostbusters (2016) reunites Melissa McCarthy with director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy), plus Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig and Saturday Night Live players Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.
Of the social media backlash, McCarthy just laughs. "I don't even talk about it," she says. "It's not like I can improve myself from the criticism. I can't become a better person or a better actor or a better mother, nothing. If somebody has a good point, I am the first to be like, 'Let me have it.' If someone just wants to spew hate, tear down women, I prefer to keep that out of my life."

Sources suggest that the all-female 'Ghostbusters' could fall foul of a rule that prohibits movies that promote the supernatural.
After all the division and controversy over its roll-out last week, the new all-female Ghostbusters re-boot may not be getting a theatrical release in China – but not for that reason…
According to a report in Variety, the newly-released movie has not yet been screened by Chinese censors, but a source suggests that the film is likely to be blocked from release there because of rules that prohibit the promotion of “cults and superstitions”.
Sony has attempted to give Ghostbusters as much chance as possible of passing the censors – if it does come out in China, it will be re-titled Super Power Dare-To-Die Team.

The director says he couldn't be more excited about the all-female reboot which stars Melissa McCarthy.
Director Judd Apatow, who helmed Trainwreck and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, has hit out at those who’ve criticised the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot. Speaking to Uproxx, the director say that those who bash the female-led reboot are probably the same people who are ‘excited about the Donald Trump candidacy.’
Judd Apatow says Ghostbusters haters are probably Trump supporters.
“I would assume there’s a very large crossover of people who are doubtful Ghostbusters will be great and people excited about the Donald Trump candidacy,” Apatow said. “I would assume they are the exact same people. That movie is made by the great Paul Feig and stars the funniest people on Earth, so I couldn’t be more excited.”
Ghostbusters is a new film for 2016 and is based on the 1984 film of the same name and is directed by Paul Feig. The film features four women on their quest to save New York City when various ghosts take over and exercise control over the humans.
Two authors Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates write a novel about the existence of ghosts and the revelation that they believe they do exist. However this novel is not taken seriously and when it becomes apparent that Gilbert wrote this book, she becomes the centre of a joke in her professional career as a teacher at Columbia University, even her students don't take her seriously.
This film quickly becomes the tell - tale narrative of who's laughing now, when Gilbert teams up with Yates and two other women to fight the ghosts that have decided to inhabit the city. A mission is deployed and the quartet set out to save the world from the evil ghost Rowan, providing the audience with lots of laughs along the way.
It’s an unfortunate honour for the upcoming female-led reboot.
The trailer for Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbuster’s reboot is Youtube’s most disliked movie trailer of all time, according to a playlist of the site’s most thumbed-down videos. The list of the top 100 most “disliked” videos on YouTube (as of April 16th), places the reboot’s trailer at number 18 overall with over 610,000 dislikes.
The Ghostbusters reboot is Youtube’s most disliked trailer.
Overall the trailer has had nearly 30 million views since its release on March 3rd, with 610,000 viewers choosing to hit the dislike button and just over 214,450 giving it a thumbs up. The much-anticipated all-female reboot of 'Ghostbusters' is out on July 15th, and the full trailer can be seen now!
Nearly 32 years after Ghostbusters first hit cinemas, the full trailer for the all-female re-boot has finally been released – and everything looks pretty faithful to the offbeat, deadpan humour of the original, despite what the sexist naysayers are prophesying.
Director Paul Feig reunites with his long-term creative foils Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy as well as ‘Saturday Night Live’ regulars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. The 53 year old filmmaker has previously described the irate response to the all-girl line-up as “vile, misogynistic s***”, and the trailer looks as if it’ll go a long way to proving him right.
Sharp wit and humour is on display, as well as some neatly touched-up special effects and digitally rendered music, and looks like it’s avoided the pitfall over being overdone in comparison to the much-beloved originals.

The cast of the upcoming Ghostbusters remake delighted the patients at a Boston hospital on Saturday (1st August) when they visited in full costume. The director spoke about passing the Bechdel test and working with Melissa McCarthy in a couple of interviews on Monday (June 1st).
Paul Feig, the director of the new movie Spy starring Melissa McCarthy, has spoken about his desire to write realistic roles for women, rather than conform to the usual rom-com rubric where all that female characters talk about are their relationships with men.
The 52 year old director, who has previously helmed movies such as Bridesmaids and Knocked Up, told The Huffington Post on Monday: “I want to write to the things I want them to be discussing and not be discussing. I have no desire to do, at this point in time, a romantic comedy where it's all about… talking about a guy or this and that. I love to be able to pass the Bechdel test.”

The actress seems to be the producers' first choice, but will her busy schedule prevent her from joining the reboot?
Ever since it was revealed that the Ghostbusters reboot would featured an all female cast, Melissa McCarthy has been the name which has come up most when discussing who could be the film’s main star. The Bridesmaids funny woman seems to be the perfect choice for the film, plus her frequent collaborator Paul Feig will be in the directors chair. So what’s stopping McCarthy from signing on?
Could Melissa McCarthy's next role be as a Ghostbuster?
Well it seems the actress’ popularity could be the problem as her busy schedule may prevent her from taking on a role in the reboot. The Hollywood Reporter writes that their sources say McCarthy is in early talks to star in the film, however there are ‘several hurdles that need to be overcome’, before the actress can join Feig for the fourth time.
Rebel Wilson could be set to re-team with Paul Feig on 'Ghostbusters 3'.
Rebel Wilson, the Australian actress who rose to fame with her comedy performances in Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect is close to signing on to star in the all-female Ghostbusters 3 movie. Bridesmaids director Paul Feig announced in October that he would be helming the movie and he is keen to utilise the female comedy talent in Hollywood.
Rebel Wilson has confirmed she has met with Paul Feig concerning Ghostbusters 3
Wilson told US TV host Matt Lauer that she'd met with Feig, who directed her in Bridesmaids, saying, "I have had a meeting, but who knows? They have to look at the script when it's finished." However, she admitted that "I'd do [Ghostbusters] for free. I probably shouldn't say that live on TV."

With Paul Feig and Katie Dippold on-board for 'Ghostbusters 3', speculation is that Melissa McCarthy will lead the cast.
Well, this is a nice Thursday surprise. We've been hearing about Ghostbusters 3 for years. Till now, it's always seemed like a bit of desperate nostalgia project from Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray made it clear he wants nothing to do with the thing. And so news that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is directing and writing a primarily female-led movie with Parks and Recreation scribe Katie Dippold is fascinating.
Paul Feig is writing and directing 'Ghostbusters 3'
"It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with@katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call," wrote Feig on Twitter.

Pictured With His Wife, Paul Feig Has Been Recruited To Help Yahoo! Get In On Original Programming.
Following the success of companies such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Microsoft, Yahoo! is throwing its hat into the ring to compete with traditional TV programming to attract viewers to its online platform. Yahoo!'s first two original series will be comedies titled: Other Space and Sin City Saints and will also be available to those with access to Apple TV and Roku.
The first Oscars promo was released today and it's... different.
The brand new trailer for the Oscars with host Ellen Degeneres looks more like it’s promoting the Tony Awards than the stuffy, glitzy Academy Awards. Not that anyone would mind – a choreographed dance number is always alright with us and if it includes tuxedoes, that’s even better.
With Degeneres hosting, it'll be an Oscars ceremony like no other.
While it doesn’t really feature any movie references, the minute-long video sets an entirely different tone for the awards than the one we’re used to. This looks more like something out of the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes or Neil Patrick Harris’ Oscars, rather than the most competitive movie awards ceremony in Hollywood.

There were several familiar faces at the 'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' New York premiere held at the Beacon Theatre, among which was former child star Haley Joel Osment, who rose to fame as Cole Sear in Oscar nominated 'The Sixth Sense' in 1999.
Alfonso Cuaron, director of space thriller movie 'Gravity', was snapped at the New York premiere of the movie alongside his son and co-writer Jonas Cuaron. The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney - who are the only visible actors on screen - and is set to be released in the UK on November 8th 2013.
Sandra Bullock is seen sharing a joke with comic actor Marlon Wayans while they are being interviewed on the red carpet. Marlon dabs the interviewer's head with a towel before wiping his own. Sandra is also seen holding hands and hugging Melissa McCarthy as they pose for photographers; director Paul Feig briefly photo bombs them, before they are joined by the rest of the cast.
Sandra Bullock talks about researching her role as a cop in Boston in a brief interview on the red carpet at the New York premiere for 'The Heat' held at the Ziegfeld Theater. 'White Chicks' star Marlon Wayans and 'The Blue Lagoon' actress Brooke Shields with her husband Chris Henchy are also snapped at the event.
Director Paul Feig was joined on the red carpet at the New York premiere for 'The Heat' at the Ziegfeld Theater by his wife Laurie Karon and several of the movie's stars including Demian Bichir with his Mexican actress wife Lisset Gutierrez, 'Still Single' star Jamie Denbo, Jessica Chaffin from 'Zoey 101', 'The Big Bang Theory' actor John Ross Bowie and Nate Corddry from 'Sunset Strip'.
Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy raised the heat at Las Vegas's CinemaCon.
Paul Feig, director of the upcoming cop flick “The Heat”, starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, expressed his support for Boston and its citizens, following the marathon bombing earlier this week.
Feig, whose upcoming flick is set in Boston, praised the resilience of bostonions, saying: "If any city had to get through adversity, this is the city to do it" during a talk at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. His mention of the attack was one of few at the convention. The other one was made by Chris Pine, prior to the screening of “Star Treck Into Darkness” on Monday. Pine’s statement aimed to draw a parallel between the bombings and the plot of his upcoming movie, in which a terrorist attack is executed against “Starfleet”. "Terrorism is a big part of our lives," Pine said.
Feig’s “The Heat” has been eagerly anticipated ever since the first trailer was released. As an addition to the “buddy cop” sub-genre, it puts somewhat of a fresh twist on the story, by making the main characters female. Despite the grim comment before the screening, the film itself was received very well by the initial audience. “The Heat” is due for official release across US theatres on June 28th.
