Some Girls Review

Grim
Some Girls takes the tired old movie about an ensemble of jaded, twentysomething youths in New York City, all looking for meaning and finding nothing but bitter heartbreak, and dramatically updates it, transforming this film into an ensemble of jaded, twentysomething youths in Los Angeles, all looking for meaning and finding nothing but bitter heartbreak.

While there's not much to recommend in this indie study of pretentiousness, it's curious for the Ribisi siblings -- Marissa, the stunning redhead best known from her cameo in The Brady Bunch Movie, and her brother Giovanni, who strikes a much different character here than he's usually typecast in.

Say Anything... Review

Excellent
Rewatch today what is inevitably going to be one of your favorite movies and see if you don't agree: John Cusack and Ione Skye are one of cinema's biggest loser couples ever. He's into kickboxing. She's the class brain. Together they're a mess, but God help us if we don't want them to end up together. Cameron Crowe crafts one of his best films around the end-of-high-school ennui and the uncertainties that come with that time in your life, but Say Anything... is aging faster than you might think, despite its many classic lines and moments.

Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street Review

OK
The teachers and principals of Recess reminisce about those rambunctious kids at Third Street School and how they've contirbuted to the holiday spirit -- whether trying to win a canned food drive or having to spend a weekend with the evil Ms. Finster.

Bed Of Roses Review

Grim
Stalker guy delivers flowers to girl he spies late one night. No, it's a romantic comedy! Short on comedy, but still a romance, I suppose. Bed of Roses, starring the badly mismatched Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson, tries so hard to be that Very Special Date Movie but fails all around. The dramatic moments are scary, the characters are unbelievable, their "problems" are pathetic. Only the soundtrack makes much of an impact.

Recess: School's Out Review

Terrible
The transition from a half-hour Saturday morning cartoon into a full-length feature film is always a tough sell. It hardly ever works because the attention span of the average child has been reduced to five nanoseconds, making a 22 minute cartoon difficult to stretch. The resulting feature typically looks cheap and underdeveloped on a big theater screen.

In fact, the few successful transitions of series to the big screen have been the Rugrats and South Park cartoons. Why were they successful? Because their creators went beyond the usual scope of TV work to incorporate real story and character development into the feature-length films.
