Whirlwind Heat

EP

Reagan – Some songs stand out for being amazing. Others stand out for being terrible. Whirlwind Heat's "Reagan" stands out as much as a red shirt at a Manchester United football match. Being the first song on the EP, I was expecting something reasonably special. This was supposed to be the great song that kept me listening to the rest. Sadly I was mistaken. Not the best of songs but we still have three to go.

Macho Man – After hearing the first song on this EP, I was hoping that "Macho Man" may have been a cover of the Village People classic. Sadly this was not to be the case. The intro, although not that impressive was a good 30-40% better than first track "Reagan". Unfortunately it faded and we were back with the same old dull vocals I had the joy of listening to a few seconds earlier.

Memory – A song that luckily left my memory almost as quickly as it entered. An unimpressive chorus, with verses of words which seem to be put together simply because they sound alike. The chorus repetitive, but definitely not in a good way, I spent a good few seconds arguing with myself, to mute or not to mute, that was the question. I let it play to the end but couldn't help thinking what a shame it was that I was missing Neighbours on UK Gold.

I Fucked Up Reagan – Yes mate, you really did. More effortless guitar "work" followed by a horn that reminded me of the musical instruments you'd get in happy meals. I was brought up to believe that if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. The only nice thing I can think of is that this track is better than the third, but that's not exactly a hard thing to achieve.

All in all, I can't compare this to anything I've heard before. This is simply because all bands, even three kids and a drum machine have songs that sound good. They may not be lyrical geniuses or the most original sounding vocalist since Brian Molko, but everyone has something going for them, be it a catchy tune, a nice solo or two. Whirlwind Heat lack all of the above. Reviewing CDs is a bit of fun, something to do in your spare time. Listening to this CD made it seem more like a job than doing 9-5 in Tesco.

Martyn Clarke

A big fat 3 out of 10.
