Tommy Evans
New Year’s Revolutions

Tommy Evans has been a key figure in the Leeds hip hop scene for some time. Always at the shows putting himself forward for the love of hip hop. From the early days with Monkee, chairman of Invizible Circle Records, playing with De La Soul in Junkyard Tactics, Tommy’s been on a mission.

The track ‘Transitions’ displays Tommy being an honest and open MC taking about his own history. There are tracks on this album that

have a happy feel and others that challenge you mentally. ‘Good Vibes’ and the successful single release ‘Move...Now!’ shows a positive and uplifting side to Evans. These tracks have good dancefloor potential and ‘Remain Forever’ featuring Neneh Cherry is a funk fuelled track full of soul and nice poetic flow. The other side to Tommy is his need to challenge you mentally and tell his perspective on how the world works. The imagery of his album shows a militant side and the title of this album is implicit to Tommy’s mission to challenge the status quo. ‘The Parralex View’ demonstrates a strong hip hop track from the conscious school of thought that is well put together and shows the same kind of inspiration from legends such as Rass Kass.

This is a solid hip hop album. Tommy has proved himself as a learned that is clear due to his well thought out and provoking lyrics. A lot of MC’s talk about angst issues or use ‘showboating’ lyrics to impress however Evans is taking about big issues that strike a chord globally and politically. Tommy has put himself on the line personally and openly that can only derive respect in the hip hop circles. He pays homage to his peers showing respect to the UK scene and promotes labels such as Y’N’R. Tommy has become a true player and we can only expect big things from him.
