'Lovers' is released today (Monday 27th June 05). The video is a performance piece, giving a real taste of the band's electrifying live shows, and allowing Brett and Bernard to strut their stuff like their lives depend on it.

Behind all the will they/won’t they?, do they/don’t they? of Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson’s picked-over relationship – one thing’s been a little overlooked: the sheer unassailable quality of the music they are currently creating together.

Well, now’s the time to stop talking and pay attention. After the welcome soft landing of ‘Refugees’ slap bang in the middle of the Top 10, ‘Lovers’ - the second single to be taken from the veritable greatest hits that is ‘Here Come The Tears’ - is where the story really begins to mutate and twist into fascinating new pop shapes.
Beginning with crashing drums and the barely-contained hysteria of Bernard’s guitar, ‘Lovers’ hits like classic Motown interbred with the swaggering poise of the very best glam rock. ‘Lovers’ is purely and simply life-affirming. At 3’35” it feels like a shot of adrenalin applied direct to the heart.

The euphoric rush of falling in love captured for your pleasure on two-inch tape, ‘Lovers’ is an old-fashioned classic single, in which Brett does the neat trick of making simple words say so very much. In instantly anthemic mode, he advises us that “We are the lovers / Two different colours / But we stand up as one”. And only the most foolhardy would stand in the tide of such positively and succinctly expressed emotion. It’s got great la-la’s too.

The Tears play the following live dates / festivals this summer:
