Having roasted the lucrative old chestnut of producing a “Best Of” album, many bands spiral downwards into an abyss of rash, ill-written songs and celebrity D list events. However, Robert Smith and The Cure has never been an ordinary band. This latest studio release represents one of the most blatant displays of Smith’s dark and unpredictable side, since the time he munched into Kenny on an episode of South Park. This is conveyed in the harrowing and instrumentally cutting; ‘Us or Them’ as Smith bellows out the defiant and terse lyrics without sounding one bit forced;

For the romantics amongst you, Smith’s tender side shines through in ‘Taking Off’ in which he tells the tale of being with someone special, it is the albums answer to ‘Friday I’m In Love’. This thirteen track sizzler of an finishes with a neat and somber acoustic lead number with an ironic title for a band like The Cure; ‘Going Nowhere’, seeing Smith slow down his vocals and add a heartfelt touch to a tingling instrumental. Thus, adding to the richness and the diversity of The Cure (to the laboured sound of Oasis).
