Master the mountain
SSX 3, EA's high adrenalin snowboarding title hits the XBOX. This is a very welcome addition to the XBOX game roster. Previously SSX Tricky has been available but was one of those titles that felt too much like a port from another console. The other XBOX snowboarding title AMPED which now has an heir in AMPED 2 is a huge let down on all levels and doesn't ever really get much better than pathetic. So the prospect of an easy to use, speed fuelled downhill screamer of a game is very welcome.

Smash all boundaries in the definitive open-mountain snowboarding experience as you explore and complete on three expansive mountain peaks. Crash the free roaming slopes and outrun the avalanches, all while hammering out sick Über tricks, wicked rail glides and mad stunts.

SSX 3 has some quality new game features - conquer the mountain: The Mountain is split up into three peaks. When you first start you only have access to peak one, peaks two & three are locked. To unlock the other two peaks you need to win or come in the top three of all races on that peak, explore 30% of the Big Challenges you find while free riding & collect over 30% of the crystals to prove your knowledge of the peak & also earn lots of cash. You can earn cash in many different ways from winning races, completing Big Challenges or simply pulling tricks on the free run.

There eight different types of event. You can free ride down the peak looking for Big Challenges or compete in a race event. Slope style races are a make for a nice change as you are judged only on the amount of points you have accumulated by the time you reach the finish line. There is no particular line to take down the course; you just got to find those big jumps to up your trick score! The Superpipe event is a self explanatory affair, pile on the tricks and catch some huge air to rack up your score. How your tricks are linked together both in the air & on the pipe will affect your overall point tally. Big Air is the massive jump - maximum speed followed by twists, grabs and multiple turns are the order of the day. When you win medals in each of the events in Race or Freestyle a rival will show up to challenge you to a one-on-one showdown in the Backcountry. You must beat your opponent to progress to the Peak Event. The Peak Event is the major race, there is one Peak Event for each peak and these races last from 12 minutes through to a staggering 30 minutes on Peak 3. The goal here is coming in first. Get down from the mountain top to the city in first place and you've unlocked the next peak.

The tricks in SSX 3 are no less than brilliant. The Xbox control pad is fully utilized to give you enough buttons, sticks and triggers to pull off some truly amazing moves that will make you proud of your boarder. There is also the Über Trick facility. This is like a power-up in other games. Fill your Über meter with adrenalin and funky stuff happens. These tricks can take some time to execute so you need to make sure you get some bug air before having a go. Complete four Über tricks to spell out the word ÜBER and the Super Über tricks kick-in. These are the sweetest tricks in the game and are totally mind boggling.

Graphically SSX 3 is a work of art. The mountain and courses look beautiful, when racing you get a real sensation of speed & the glistening snow, great lighting effects and snow boarder animations are all excellent. Sound-wise SSX 3 also delivers the goods. Music and snowboarding have always been hand in glove and lots of licensed music from major artist appears in the soundtrack. Some of the highlights are Jane's Addiction, Fatboy Slim, Dilated Peoples and Black Eyed Peas.

Overall, if you are into the snow boarding culture or you simply like a fast and frenzied racing title then SSX 3 is the game for you. Get this one bought and overdose on adrenalin.
