Anita Lane - "The Next Man That I See" Single Review

3. Anita Lane The Next Man That I See (12" - Mute)
Like a higher pitched and more tuneful Nico, Anita Lane (The Birthday Party) uses indolent whispers and sultry suggestions to lure her audience.
As a co-founder of Nick Caves Bad Seeds, shes no spring chicken (although her voice on the cds second track, The Wildest Dream could quite easily have been supplied by a prepubescent teenager) and no idle starlet. Shes been part of the music circuit for some time, working with the likes of Barry Adamson and Mick Harvey. And her years of musical experience shows in the retro style of this single.
Despite her Melbourne heritage this is the unmistakable sound of defiant New York punk rock with added bits of Hammond, crudely twee in parts but nevertheless raw and fresh.
