Rachael Yamagata
EP (BMG MUSIC)

A young girl with a sweet, soulful voice that would start a bidding war between churches to get her in their choir, coupled with natural beauty obviously makes her a prime target for the manufacturing pop music industry. However, with this self titled EP Rachel makes a King Canute like stance against falseness and pretentiousness, opting instead for sincerity. Her Patti Smith meets Patsy Cline with a sprinkling of Sheryl Crow style vocals and lucid lyrics about aspects of love and romance, as is epitomised in‘Worn Me Down’ (which features on the charmed soundtrack) make for a compelling five track taster of Rachel’s potential.

Rachael Yamagata - EP (BMG MUSIC) - EP Review

The melodious tunes aided by the inclusion of a piano, such as in the meaningful ‘The Reason Why’ sit nicely with Rachel’s soothing yet authoritative vocals. The enchanting Chicago songstress has a maturity beyond her tender years, it will be interesting to see if she can produce a full album without compromising her qualities that have gotten her this far.
