PULP - 'HITS' - RELEASE DATE: 18th NOVEMBER 2002

RELEASE DATE: 18th NOVEMBER 2002
Catalogue number CID 8126/063513-2

Pulp release their 'Hits' collection through Island Records on Nov 18. An almost chronological, almost exhaustive collection of their years with the label, 'Hits' takes in everything from 1992's 'Babies' (originally released on pre-Island Sheffield independent Gift) through to this year's 'Bad Cover Version'. It also includes a brand new song in the shape of 'Last Day Of The Miners' Strike'. 'Hits' amounts to a fantastic record of one of our very best - and best-loved - bands; an unarguable reminder of just how consistently great they have always been.

For completists, the chronological and comprehensive anomalies are: 'Mis-shapes' is not on at all because the band can't stick it and feel this period is best represented by its double A-side 'Sorted For E's And Wizz'. Strictly speaking 'Sunrise' should come before 'Bad Cover Version', since it was the double A-side of 'Trees'. Oh, and 'Underwear' was always planned by the band as a double A-side, but in the event it was somewhat overshadowed by its partner release 'Common People'.

Incidentally, isn't it tragic looking back that 'Common People' was kept off the No.1 spot by Robson & Jerome singing 'Unchained Melody'?*

Tracklisting: BABIES, RAZZMATAZZ, LIPGLOSS, DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME? COMMON PEOPLE, UNDERWEAR, SORTED FOR Es & WIZZ, DISCO 2000, SOMETHING CHANGED, HELP THE AGED, THIS IS HARDCORE, A LITTLE SOUL, PARTY HARD, TREES, BAD COVER VERSION, SUNRISE, LAST DAY OF THE MINERS STRIKE

Pulp meanwhile have organised an enormous live event at the Magna Centre outside Sheffield on Dec 14. Set in a former steel mill, Auto is planned to join Spain's Sonar as a progressively programmed festival representative of new musical directions. Other than Pulp playing for the last time before their year sabbatical, it will feature Royksopp, Lemon Jelly and a whole host of left-field musical talent. Tickets are 30. * Or that later that year Mick Hucknell did the same thing to 'Sorted'?
