'Sell Out'

DVD Review

Although a lot of people don't know this, The Pixies were one of the most influential rock acts of the late eighties and early nineties. Over the course of five albums they left an indelible imprint on an immerging musical period of significance. Their albums have continued to sell over the years and the gravity of their influence on other bands has not stopped gathering momentum.

Considered for many, the 'Holy Grail' of band reunions, the Pixies rejoined forces in 2004 for a global tour, which literally sold out in minutes of tickets going on sale. 'Sell Out' captures the band at their concert in Belfort, France, as well as showing an extensive collection of bonus live performances from Manchester, to Coachella, to the Fuji Rock Festival. All of their classics are included, from the menacing madness of 'Tame' to the wistful apocalypse of 'Where Is My Mind' and shows the band at their very best.

It is an understatement to say that the Pixies are considered one of the most influential bands in alternative music during the 80s and 90s, with their legacy continuing right into the present day. Patenting a unique stop/start/quiet/loud dynamic, the band were instrumental in feeding the imaginations of many bands, most famously Nirvana – Kurt Cobain publicly attributing the Pixies to their sound and success. Coming together in 1986, Frank Black (real name Charles Thompson, alternative name Black Francis), Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering landed themselves a record deal with 4AD the following year, and released their first EP 'Come On Pilgrim'. Hooking up with renowned producer Steve Albini, 1988's 'Surfer Rosa' gained praise from the UK music press and cemented their hybrid style of beautiful melody and jarring guitar hooks. Signing to Elektra Records as a result of this hype, their next album 'Doolittle', in 1989 gave way to a more clean and polished sound and made substantial waves in the US Chart, as well as breaking Top Ten in the UK.

By 1990, tensions were beginning to show between Black and Deal over their musical input within the band, although their third album Bossanova still garnered positive reviews. By the next year, despite another album, Trompe le Monde, the Pixies went on hiatus. Solo projects were undertaken, occasionally paths were crossed, but the news of their reunion did not come until 2003, when Black revealed all in an interview. 2004 saw their welcome and long awaited return to the live circuit and the band were greeted with tremendous warmth and acclaim.

Pixies release 'Sell Out' on 3 October 2005 through Warner Music Vision.
