Following a headline show at the prestigious Shepherds Bush Empire on July 7th, Nate Jamesunleashes his second single ‘Universal’ on July 18.

‘Universal’ was one of the undoubted highlights at Nate’s headline show at Jazz Caf earlier this year. “I wanted to grasp that party feel of classic Stevie songs,” he says. “It just illustrates that I’m a guy who likes to enjoy himself! I just write about what I know and what I’ve experienced.”

Nate is set to play his next major headline show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on July 7th – with special guest Dawn Robinson (En Vogue/ Lucy Pearl). Just four days laterhe releasesdebut album ‘Set The Tone’, a mighty funk affair which swings from old skool 70s to funkadelic. Highlights include the rockier ‘I’ll Decline’ (out September), the breezy opening track ‘The Message’ and sweet balladry of ‘Justify Me’. Nate says: “I’m very much a person that writes from the heart. It’s very soul/funk because my influences are Prince, Lenny – and of course Raphael Saadiq.”

Nate’s eagerly awaited debut album Set The Tone will be released on August the 8 th.

The potted history

After a bidding war in 2004 in which Sony made three separate offers, Suffolk-born Nate James signed to Universal Music Publishing last September. Just a couple of months – and several sessions with top names including Eg White, Peter Vetesse and Colin Emmanuel later – independent label OneTwo (home of The Brand New Heavies) came on board in December.

In the few months since, Nate has gone on to wow the industry and fans alike with live performances at key events including MTV Baselounge, 1Xtra’s R&B Sensations, Radio 2’s Soul Solutions and the Southport Weekender.

His debut single, ‘Set The Tone’, an instant soul classic, was released in February. Supported by tastemakers including Radio One’s Trevor Nelson, it reached number one on Choice FM’s R&B chart, as well as enjoying high rotation on MTV Base, 1Xtra, Jazz FM, Choice FM, Galaxy Radio, Channel U & Kiss TV. It also reached #11 on the Independent Sales Chart. Look out for his guest vocal on forthcoming dance smash Poker Pets’ ‘Loving You’, released on Positiva in June.

‘Universal’ is released July 18 on OneTwo Records.
