MC Lars The Graduate Album

For a man who seems remarkably interested in pigeonholes - he refers to himself as a post-punk laptop rapper, and as a member of the iGeneration - The Graduate is a great cross-style disc, which sounds at times like Eminem fronting a screamo band or The Offspring. Sampling from songs like Iggy Pop's The Passenger, the rap is very white and very literate, with endless witty references to hip culture, which sometimes comes over as a little They Might Be Giants. Where it edges into punk, the album hits its highlights - such as Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock. With sarcasm dripping out of every groove, and attacking everything from every angle, MC Lars is clearly a member of the South Park generation. If the album has a weakness, it is that, unlike something like, say, Pretty Fly For A White Guy, once the first few plays are over, the joke wears thin and the music is a little weak to sustain repeat plays.
