The UK's biggest festival organiser, Mean Fiddler (Reading/Leeds, Glastonbury) unveils the UK's newest and freshest summer event. Latitude, inspired more by European festivals such as the celebrated experience of Lowlands, is set in the beautiful, sweeping grounds of the historic Henham Park Estate, Southwold, on the sunrise coast of Suffolk. In the vision of Mean Fiddler boss, Melvin Benn, Latitude promises to bring something unique and different to the British summer calendar. "Diversity is the main thing here," explains Benn, "I want to bring that genteel, less manic feel that European festivals have to Latitude. The Haye On Wye event has also inspired me a lot and I want to incorporate elements of that to our festival. I want to be able to wander from books to music to film in the way you can in your own sitting room. I am looking forward to that feeling of being able to listen live to the music and then the words of an author or poet or environmentalist rather than just reading it in the newspapers or listening on a CD." Expect music, art, comedy, cabaret, film, literature, theatre, performance art, dance, sculpture, workshops, restaurants and bars offering waiter service.

Music

The site, with its natural, tree-lined boundaries is situated to the south of the Estate's grounds, flanked by country roads and reaching as far as the beached coastline. It creates a 15,000 capacity area; an intimate, and cosy country space with stunning views and undulating grounds. Once inside the gates, an uncharted world will unfold before you. The main arena will boast the three main live stages showcasing an eclectic range of alternative music spread over the three days.

The music, specifically hand-picked for this festival will perfectly soundtrack the hazy summer weekend, adding to its essentially holiday atmosphere. With headline sets from Snow Patrol, Antony & The Johnsons and Mogwai, whether it's letting the music soothe your ears while lazing in the summer sun with a fresh glass of cold beer in your hand, or jumping around at the front, sweaty, happy and full of life, the music arenas have it all on offer.

Latitude is not just about music, it's about so much more. And unlike some UK festivals that stop at midnight when the headline band finishes, Latitude believes the fun should never end. All day and all night random and surreal situations will present themselves to you, enticing you to join in activities you never thought even existed. It is, after all these bizarre events that make a true festival experience and are the memories that last. A throbbing hive of activity will bustle on the banks of the ground's stunning winding lake. Wandering around, popping in and out of tents you may, over a period of an hour, sing karaoke, be mesmerised by a magician who plays with your mind and perceptions, laugh so much it hurts at a comedian you're not even familiar with, tango with a stranger and watch beautiful burlesque that may just inspire you to try it for yourself.

Or you could just sit back soaking up the fun and atmosphere, laughing at the passer-bys, and relax at the waiter-service bars, sipping a beer or even a glass of champagne. Latitude has everything you may desire. And more…

Literature

Latitude is dedicated to bringing all aspects of entertainment to life, in one area, for one weekend. Start by unearthing the bookworm inside you and enjoy literature readings with a difference. Bringing life to many good and bad books, Robin Ince's Book Club of comics, writers, and performers tell stories and bring you readings accompanied, appropriately, by saccharine or sublime soundtracks. Whether it's Josie Long bringing her oddball flights of fancy, or Natalie Haynes detailing her obsession with diagnostic murder, the Book Club is a fantastic concept with a wisecracking wit, you'll never read these books in the same way again.

Also here for your enjoyment is the legendary Vox 'n' Roll - informal readings combined with music that humbly began at Filthy MacNasty's in Islington, London in February 1996. It has grown in popularity, as the word of mouth whisperings of these alternative takes on literature, often found in bars, spread across town. A full 'vox n roll' session offers forums of guest speakers discussing music, albums, gigs, and the industry at large over the festival weekend.

Performance Poetry

If it's the more contemporary urban side to literature that takes your fancy submerse yourself in poetry and comedy sketches running alongside Hip Hop, slam poets, bizarre raconteurs, spoken word, lyricism, storytelling, rappers, and much much more.

Comedy

If it's the giggles you're after then Latitude will be boasting the very finest in laugh out loud entertainment. Expect to see the funniest in stand-up from Marcus Brigstocke, Rob Newman and many many more. Be absorbed by satirical wit, hilarious observations and bizarre flights of fancy; lose sense and time and prepare for bellies to ache and cheeks to hurt.

Guilty Pleasures

The fun continues well into the night when, suddenly you may find yourself dancing to Dolly Parton's 'Working 9 to 5' or wielding an air guitar to Bon Jovi's 'Livin' On A Prayer' courtesy of DJ sets from the renowned Gods of a good time: Guilty Pleasures and The Pleasurettes. Confess your sins, slow dance with the one you fancy and sing along to the songs you've always pretended you didn't like. All done with a guaranteed smile on your face.

Cabaret

The emphasis here is on all things fun and sexy. Let go of your inhibitions: do and be anything you want. The best little cabaret house in Suffolk is a topsy turvy surreal bordello full of surprises and spectacular stage shows. Visually rich, beautiful and bizarre, the shows promise to titillate, torment and amuse its guests as they peep through the doorway. With interactive areas such as cabaret karaoke, a Victorian beauty parlour, b-grade cinema, a Vegas style wedding chapel, Charleston and tango workshops, tassel twirling and an amazing stage show featuring the cream of Europe's cabaret talent.

Film

Seek refuge from the realms of reality and slip into the world of quirky film, movies and music courtesy of The Noise of Art and Halloween. Specifically chosen shorts, art, silent films and visuals, accompanied by live music, video, dancers and DJ's will play throughout the weekend. Outrageous cabaret bands will mix art, scenes, visuals and live music to award winning short films, bring them to life and adding a whole new dimension to the experience. A full program or animated film plus Q&A sessions and discussions with selected film makers, music documentaries, film maker retrospectives will run throughout the weekend.

As the dancefloor gets hot 'n' sweaty, a series of specially commissioned moonlight electronic sonatas will take place under the stars from internationally known DJs and producers...

Theatre

Find the thespian inside you and witness the very best in up and coming fringe theatre. Groups of actors bring a host of readings, scripts and contemporary shows to Latitude prior to performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival.

Encouraging audience participation, you have the chance to tread the boards and try out your acting skills, work on new scripts and lose your inhibitions.

Leftfield

Often found in the far-out fields at Glastonbury Festival, Leftfield enters centre-stage Latitude, providing a unique mix of performance and politics that will add a whole new dimension to the event. Cynics may say that young people are not interested in politics but the experience of the Leftfield at other events is that there is a real hunger for political debate and ideas, as well as for good music and entertainment.

Art

The site is an exhibition in itself showcasing original and innovative works of art which are inspired both by the local setting as well as contemporary British artists. Musician's artwork, music documentation and music inspired pieces will also be on view as well as the more traditional and the more risqué. Grab a spray-can and design your own tag by trying your hand at graffiti art in the many courses.

The Site

The area where the festival will take place is host to a fairytale woodland with a great variety of bizarre looking, very old trees.

The site is also at the heart of old folklore, none stranger then the often talked about Black Shuck. Made famous internationally by The Darkness' ode, and by being the inspiration behind the Sherlock Holmes novel, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', the 'Doom Dog' has terrified locals by reportedly appearing headless, or floating on a carpet of mist. The spectre is said to haunt graveyards, side roads and dark forests near to Henham Park Estate.
