JOE STRUMMER & The Mescaleros
COMA GIRL
(6/10/03 On Hellcat Records)

This release would have been passed over by many critics. In favour of a piece about what The Darkness had for breakfast, or which celebrity The King’s Of Leon decided to be pictured with this week, but for the fact that Joe Strummer died last December. It is a relief to hear the sincerity and honesty in his angry folk vocal style right the way to the end, as too many badly sung ‘The Clash’ tribute songs may have washed the memory away.

Music - JOE STRUMMER & The Mescaleros: COMA GIRL (6/10/03 On Hellcat Records) - Single Review

‘Coma Girl’ is taken from the ‘Streetcore’ album out on 20/1003 and contains Joe’s slick unique vocals right from the start, as in his own inimitable way he tells a tale of modern life:

‘Some fast food fanatic was burning down a burger van.”

The track turns into quite an instrumentally upbeat pop song with jangling guitars. Joe’s narrative style on this number is as compelling to listen to as it has always been. For 3 minutes and 45 seconds the great man comes to life again.
