Jakko M Jakszyk The Bruised Romantic Glee Club Album

Prog rock isn't just something The Mars Volta cited as a reference. The genre has never truly gone away, and on this double CD, Jakszyk stays spot in the centre of the bullseye. With an amazing collection of guests, such as saxophonist Mel Collins, guitarist Robert Fripp, and Dave Stewart, this has 70s supergroup written all over it. Like King Crimson with better vocals, there is a lot of grandiosity and what passes for intellectual sophistication, in the manner of Emerson Lake and Palmer, but the disc truly comes alive in the instrumental breaks (doesn't all prog get more interesting when the singer pipes down?).

Catley's Ashes is a straight instrumental that should rank in any jazz rock canon - the guitar playing and drumming is fantastic. Disc 2 is a look at some of Jakszyk's influences, and is as good - the cover of Crimson's Islands is great, and the playing maintains its high level. Prog's still very much alive in the old hands.

3.5/5
