It seems like ages since Gomez were being hailed as darlings of the UK music scene and in fact it was ages, try six years.

But thankfully they’re back with a melodious acoustic ballad that oozes Gomez from every bar. With Tom Gray on vocals, Sweet Virginia may sound a little dull on paper, but its passionate and muted dramatics ensure for a heartfelt and contemplative listen.

With a sprinkle of sensual strings in precisely the right place, Sweet Virginia comes from their fourth album, Split the Difference which has been produced by Tchad Blake of Crowded House and Tom Waits fame.

Sweet Virginia is a beautiful, folky offering from Gomez and is a fantastic reminder of why they did win that coveted award.
