Gabrielle - Play To Win - Album Review

Gabrielle
Play To Win

Gabrielle has become a bit of an institution in the British music scene. If you can remember ‘Dreams’ in the early nineties, where she made a name for herself, she continues in the same vein creating easy listening, soulful pop music. There’s no denying the serenity in her voice. She has a seductive, sweet voice full of soul that can be moving and uplifting.

Gabrielle - Play To Win - Album Review

‘Play to Win’ is the new release from Gabrielle. This album is for those introspective moments. It’s light and soothing. There’s a pop formula here that is predictable but it works well for what it is. It’s a far cry from the depth of Fleetwood Mac and I don’t think it really challenges Norah Jones, however it has it’s place and is worthy of a purchase, if you want a chilled album to relax to. I felt moved by her lyrics that are positive and honest. It’s nice to hear unpretentious heart-warming lyrics that are easy to understand and have a message.

This album starts well and finishes softer. I really liked ‘Latchkey Kid’ and the first six tracks are all good pop songs. It’s much of the same all the way through and doesn’t have much of a progressive sound. However Gabrielle is a solid artist with a good voice and if you like her other albums you may well like this. I felt peaceful and calm after listening to this album but not intellectually challenged. It’s for the softer moments.
