Scissors In The Sand

Single Review

Don't worry, 'Scissors in the Sand' isn't the theme tune to one of those government safety films from the 70s that would have left a nation of children s**t scared of frolicking on the beach for fear of foot laceration and severe blood loss (assuming that they wouldn't already be terrified by the turds floating past as they paddled of course)…Ahh, the good old days!

Yes, this song is a trip down memory lane – It's a reminder of how sparse and moody the music was that Goths hung their heads to on sticky dance-floors throughout the 80s.

Not that this is an old track, it's a brand new song but it could easily be from the Bunnymen's (way) back catalogue. That's no criticism though – Ian McCulloch's gravely tones, moaning out cryptic phrases over swirling and chopping guitars is a welcome addition to post modern music scene. For once it won't be a second-rate cover version by a barely post-pubescent, ex-boy-band 'singer' that sends a new generation of music lovers running to rummage through their old man's vinyl collection. This time it will be an old band producing something new that lives up to the adage 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

And just in case you're wondering, this is no self-conscious reprise driven by a need to pay the gas bill – This is as authentically cool as Echo and the Bunnymen have ever been.

Scissors in the Sand should be a hit. And it should be the opening live performance on the first episode of the long awaited return of The Tube. Ahh, the good old days…
