THE CARLING WEEKEND: READING AND LEEDS FESTIVALS

THE DANCE STAGE LINE-UP

If headline and exclusive performances from the likes of White Stripes and The Darkness coupled with a bill that encompasses the newly rejuvenated Morrissey and hip hop godhead 50 Cent over three days alongside over one hundred of the best and biggest bands in the world wasn't enough, organisers Mean Fiddler are pleased to announce the line-up for The Dance Stage for this year's festivals. With headliners Roots Manuva and Squarepusher joining last year's turntable heroes 2 Many DJ's the party won't stop for the three days.

THE DANCE STAGE artists are as follows

Friday 27 th August at The Carling Weekend: Reading Festival

Saturday 28 th August at The Carling Weekend: Leeds Festival

Celebrated underground hip hop artist Roots Manuva redefined hip hop in the UK with the release of ‘ Brand New Second Hand' in 1999. Described as the “most significant and original new voice in hip hop” (The Independent), Roots Manuva . He went on to produce the seminal ‘Run Come Save Me', including the classic ‘Witness' which is still a DJ and dancefloor favourite , as well as collaborating with the likes of Super Furry Animals, Leftfield and Mr Scruff. Roots Manuva returns to The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals to headline this year's Dance Stage for the first time since his 2002 performance proved his status as the innovator of UK hip hop.

Last year 2 Many DJs absolutely rocked the Leeds Festival, closing the weekend with a remix of Seven Nation Army in tribute to The White Stripes after Jack White pulled out of the festival due to a broken finger. Originally a rock outfit playing under the guise of Soulwax , the Belgium duo broke through to the dance music mainstream with their 2002 release ‘ As Heard on Radio Soulwax' using 45 songs in 62 minutes - mixing Dolly Parton with Destiny's Child and Peaches with The Cramps - and bridging the gap between dance and rock music for a new generation. (Soulwax will also be playing the Radio 1 stage.)

Warp signing, !!! (“Chk Chk Chk”) have been pumping out their punk funk fusion to dance floors everywhere. Their high energy, chaotic live shows are a cacophony of beats, bleeps, guitars, jazz instruments and percussion that has even wallflowers jumping on tables to dance. Hailing from the same musical gene pool as LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture, !!! 's 2003 release ‘Me and Guiliani Down By The School Yard (A True Story)' caused a summer storm in the UK . Their latest release ‘Louden Up Now' continues the dancefloor devastation, but it will be !!! 's live performance on the Dance Stage that will truly slay the crowd.

LCD Soundsystem's 2003 release ‘ I'm Losing My Edge ' took on the “borrowed nostalgia of the unremembered ‘80s” melding punk, funk and electro with a deadpan voice and inspired, hilarious lyrics that announced the arrival of a new kind of electroclash. The brainchild of one half of legendary production team DFA , James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem is also a live force to be reckoned with. Synths, jazz horns, live percussian and underlying beats come to life under ironic tones making observations on modern music that will have the uninitiated dancing and aficionados laughing.

Hailed as the next big thing and likened to both Dizzee Rascal and Ms Dynamite, MC Shystie is proving the ladies are rising fast in the garage ranks to top the bill. She first came to prominence when her now-infamous white label response to Dizzee Rascal's ‘ I Luv U ' took to the airwaves and kick-started the ‘response remix'. Her album, ‘Diamond in The Dirt ' takes a woman's perspective on the MC world while sonically traveling the spectrum from garage and hip hop to electro and gospel.

Output Recordings turn, Black Strobe create raw techno rock with a dark edge. The Parisian duo released their first single, ‘Innerstrings' which predated the electroclash revival and received props from DJ Hell, Tuga, Andrew Weatherall and Trevor Jackson. ‘Me and Madonna' received similar praise as well as critical acclaim from the dance press. Their latest single, ‘Chemical Sweet Girl' is more “dance music that's not afraid to scare people”.

DJ Format and MC Abdominal draw comparisons to A Tribe Called Quest and Ugly Duckling. DJ Format's ‘Music For The Mature B-Boy' starred Abdominal on vocals, alongside members of Jurassic 5. With an old skool style and fresh attitude, this duo have been hailed as the new purveyors of positive hip hop.

Electro-clash purveyors Zoot Woman emerged in 1999 with the limited edition single ‘It's Automatic' to much press fanfare and club support. With Les Rythmes Digitales' Jacques Lu Cont (aka Stuart Price) as one of the founding members, sharp white suits and a bevy of renowned graphic artists and directors producing their sound and vision, Zoot Woman were on a fast rise to stardom. However, when Madonna invited Price to become her musical director on her 2000 ‘Drowned World' tour, Zoot Woman's plans took a back seat. They released their second album, ‘ Zoot Women' in September 2003 and are back on the live circuit with all three members in tow.

Producing cinematic pop with melancholic but beautiful undertones, Blue States , have gone from strength to strength since the release of their debut album, ‘Nothing Changes Under The Sun' . Remixes for Thievery Corporation, Badly Drawn Boy, Layo and Bushwacka! and Future Sound of London , were followed by the 2002 album, ‘ Man Mountain ' . The stand-out single, ‘ Season Song' was used on the soundtrack for 28 Days Later . In preparation for Blue States' third album, the band enlisted two new full-time members on vocals and guitar. Sonically linked to virtually anything on Factory Records, Blue States' latest offering is a departure from their debut, yet still reaches for the sky.

Japanese duo Boom Boom Satellites flirt with techno, rock, jazz, break-beat and hip hop. Since catching the attention of the UK and Europe with the 1997 release ‘Dub Me Crazy' and ‘For a Moment of Silence' , Boom Boom Satellites have appeared at Glastonbury , V-98 and Roskilde . They make their debut at The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals with an electric live show.

The solo project of former Boo Radleys' songwriter Martin Carr, bravecaptain releases his ‘ Eating The Afterlife' EP in June. The bravecaptain album, ‘All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace' will be released in July.

Sunday 29 th August at The Carling Weekend: Reading Festival

Friday 27 th August at The Carling Weekend: Leeds Festival

Often called genius, contemporary music creator Squarepusher has nine albums under his belt. Since releasing 2001's ‘ Go Plastic' , Squarepusher has acquired a list of achievements including a sold out US tour, nomination for the Shortlist Prize by The Neptunes for his 2002 live album, ‘ Do You Know Squarepusher' and inclusion in the soundtrack for Sophia Coppola's Lost In Translation'. Celebrated director Chris Cunningham has even based a film around Squarepusher's music. He counts Tom Yorke and Andre 3000 among his fans. His latest album, ‘Ultravisitor' has upped the ante on pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. His live shows are always different. Expect the unexpected from this headliner.

Despite being a stalwart of the UK hip hop scene – running the Lyrical Lounge , presenting Channel 4's Flava , sharing the mic with Talib Kweli and Jeru Da Damaja and signing to Maceo from De La Soul's US label – Ty didn't release his debut album, ‘Awkward' on Big Dada until 2001. Described as a soul album as well as a hip hop record, Ty put the emotion of his fostered childhood, discovery of hip hop and celebration of blackness and individuality to produce an album that is emotive, humorous and powerful. Yet it was his 2003 release, ‘ Upwards ' that set Ty apart. It was voted No. 1 album of the year in DJ Magazine and listed in the top ten by Hip Hop Connection, The Voice, Future Music, iDJ and Blues and Soul, as well as album of the year by listeners of Gilles Peterson's Radio 1 show. The March release of ‘ Oh U Want More ' saw Ty team up with labelmate, Roots Manuva to produce an infectious mash-up of styles to define the sound of UK Urban. Ty takes to the Dance Stage with a full live band.

Japan 's number #1 hip hop artist, DJ Krush has gained international attention since his 1994 solo release ‘Krush'. He was one of the first DJs in Japan to use turntables as a live instrument. His solo works have ranked highly in the charts in Japan and the world.

When New York trio, Radio 4 , discovered what happened when you mixed post-punk, reggae and house and techno, a new sound and underground political musical movement was born. With their EP, ‘Dance to the Underground ' Radio 4 found that dancing could be a form of rebellion in the Guiliani-controlled New York club scene. Their second album, ‘ Gotham !' (produced by DFA) was described as “half political rally, half dance party” and found an even larger audience post-911 as the songs took on new meaning. 2004 sees Radio 4 release ‘Stealing of A Nation' - another politically charged album aimed at the American elections, the invasion of Iraq and the current administration.

The animated duo of Peter Parker and Sneaky take Fingathing to a new level of avant hip hop and far-flung funk. Their albums use a unique concept basis of storytelling through each album, culminating in their latest offering, ‘Fingathing and the Big Red Nebula' . The album picks up where the last one left off, with the duo having faked their own deaths and been flung of in to the far reaches of space. Their live performances promise so much more.

Preacher, poet, comedian, hip hop's answer to Tom Waits, music's answer to David Lynch. Buck 65 has been described as many things. Those who have seen his enigmatic live performances know them all to be true. The Canadian hip hop artist whose roots began in the days of Anticon has since released the fourth album of the Language Arts series, ‘Square', to critical acclaim. He has picked up fans in Radiohead, Aphex Twin and Vincent Gallo. His unique storytelling and gruff lyrical prowess make his live shows not to be missed.

Up and coming female electro duo, Client , produce “sexy rock'n'roll electro…and not even a guitar in sight,” according to The Libertines' Carl Barat. With guest vocals from Barat and fellow Libertine, Pete Doherty on their upcoming September album, ‘City' , Client are carving a niche both on record and performing live across Europe and the UK, blending lush electro and witty lyricism.

Following special guest spots with the Scissor Sisters across the UK and live performances at Return to New York , The Loose Cannons bring their funktopic philosophies to the Dance Stage. The duo began as DJs but were inspired to produce their own music after Bootsy Collins told them to, “keep the funk alive fellas”. Their forthcoming release, ‘ I Like It When Ya' takes a filthy, ass-slapping bass-line and melodic vocals over funk laden beats. Remixed by The Jungle Brothers, Mark Ronson and Moto Blanco, it's already becoming a floor-filler.

Montreal-based Chromeo produce melodic takes of urban romance with a hip hop edge. They were discovered by Tiga and remixed by Trevor Jackson and the DFA. Their debut album, ‘She's In Control' was released last year.
