In our exclusive video interview Ben Chaplin admits shooting the graphic sex scenes with Nicole Kidman was daunting, but is quick to say that it was Kidman's professionalism and sense of humour that took the edge off his embarrassment. She is, he adds, perhaps the most hard-working actress he has ever performed with.
Chaplin also admits to a guilty conscience: he worked in a bank for three days in preparation for the role (it was supposed to be a week but he couldnt face day four) and found himself checking his pockets when a thousand pounds went missing. Thankfully, it turned out to be an accounting error.
In the film Chaplin plays John, a mild-mannered banker who has never been lucky in love. Fed up with waiting for the right girl to come along, John takes a chance on a Russian mail-order bride arranged via the Internet.
His Internet love connection is the enigmatic Nadia (Nicole KIdman). When Nadia's Russian 'cousins', Yura (Matthieu Kassovitz) and Alexei (Vincent Cassell), turn up unexpectedly to celebrate her birthday, John's routine existence is blown out of the water as he finds himself drawn into an adventure that he didn't ask for, but that might be exactly what he needs.
Birthday Girl is a new romantic comedy thriller starring Nicole Kidman ("The Others", "Moulin Rouge", "Eyes Wide Shout", "To Die For"), Ben Chaplin ("The Truth About Cats & Dogs", "The Thin Red Line"), Vincent Cassell ("Elizabeth", "Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc"), Mathieu Kassovitz ("Amelie", "The Fifth Element", "Jacok the Liar").
