AFI will soon make their long awaited return with the release of their storming new album (Miss Murder on May 29th) and single (Decemberunderground, June 12th) .

Decemberunderground is the sound of a band in full stride, a band whose only have a point to prove to themselves. The album opens with a trademark AFI intro that sounds like it could have been used in some sort of ancient ritual thanks to the sinister stomps and claps provided by some lucky fans in the studio. First single Miss Murder peaks with the type of chorus that's made AFI's name – raucous rock written by a band whose metal looks belie their ear for an amazing pop hook – no doubt a result of growing up listening to 80s rock. Love Like Winter sounds like it could satisfy many a stadium audience while on Kill Caustic and Affliction AFI flex their rock muscles.

Decemberunderground is produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day) and will be the band's first longplayer since 2003's Sing The Sorrow. That album debuted at #5 in the States and produced the hit Girls Not Grey. It also helped the band to their tally of 1.2m record sales worldwide. In the UK AFI sold out the Astoria in London and headlined the Radio 1 tent at the Reading/Leeds festival.

The band consists of Davey Havok (vocals), Jade Puget (guitars), Hunter (bass) and Adam Carson (drums) and hail from the Ukiah, not far San Francisco in California.

It's a real indication of the devotion that AFI inspire in their fans that in between albums the band's fans, known as the Despair Faction, have been occupied by a two year long online treasure hunt. The exact nature of the 'treasure' is still not known, but this hasn't deterred thousands of fans (the band have an incredible 130,000 friends on MySpace) from following clues to the next stage of the hunt.
